Silky smooth, creamy and totally satisfying, this chocolate avocado pudding is one of my favorite easy dessert recipes. Made with wholesome ingredients that are rich in healthy fats, magnesium and other nutrients, it’s so much more delicious (and nourishing) than the boxed stuff found on store shelves.

As you probably guessed by the title, fresh avocados are one of those ingredients. In addition to making the perfect EASY base for yummy, chocolatey pudding, they’re rich in folate, potassium, fiber, antioxidants and of course heart healthy fats. Chocolate is rich in antioxidants, too, plus magnesium and potassium.

If you’re skeptical about using avocados in dessert, I promise you that can’t taste them . . . pinky swear and everything. The only caveat is that they must. not. be. overripe – no brown spots or streaks. If you follow that guideline this chocolate pudding recipe is pretty much mistake-proof.

Just toss everything into a food processor and give it a whirl, and remember:

There is nothing better than a friend, unless it is a friend with chocolate.” – Linda Grayson

Optional Flavoring Ideas

Personally, I think the simple version of this recipe is the best, but if you want to change things up every once in awhile here are a couple of things I’ve tried that turned out well .

  • Peppermint extract – I used 1/4 tsp and it was just right, but depending on how strong your extract is you may want a little less or a little more. After you’ve made the pudding, I suggest adding in 1/8 teaspoon and blending for 30 seconds, then adding more in 1/8 teaspoon increments until the peppermint flavor reaches the intensity you prefer.
  • Mushroom coffee powder – When I add this lion’s mane and chaga coffee powder it adds a lovely mocha flavor. I usually add this one to taste to my bowl instead of the whole batch.

Ingredients

Instructions

  • Melt the chocolate using my easy or easier option. Easy option: Melt the the chocolate in a double boiler. If you don't have a double boiler, you can use a stainless steel bowl set inside a pan of simmering water. Even easier option: Place the chocolate chips in a small pot and place them on the stove over low heat until they're melted. Make sure to keep the heat low so they don't scorch.
  • Add the avocados, 2 tablespoons of the cocoa/cacao powder, coconut milk/water, 1 tablespoons of the maple syrup, vanilla, sea salt, melted chocolate, and any optional additions (like powdered mushroom coffee or peppermint extract) to the food processor.
  • Turn the food processor on for 30-45 seconds, then remove the lid and scrape down the sides of the bowl. Turn the food processor on for another minute or so – until it has a smooth, creamy texture.  When the pudding is well-blended, taste it and add an additional tablespoon of maple syrup or cocoa/cacao powder if needed.  (Blend for another 30 seconds if you add anything.)
  • Serve right away or refrigerate until chilled (about 30-60 minutes) and then serve. This chocolate pudding is best when eaten within one day.

  1. I was given sour pie cherries from someone’s tree, so I got really lucky! Next summer put the word out and someone might let you pick from their trees. Until then, Costco is carrying an organic pie cherry that’s a more of a purple color, but it has that pie cherry sourness so it should work really well! If all else fails, look for canned Morello cherries because they work in pie fillings as well. Hope this helps!

  2. OK, am I blind? I see no mention of cherries at all. There are no pictures so don’t see them in the post, either. Plus, it isn’t Heather making the reply to the cherries, it is someone else??? Confused!!!

  3. I made this but it thickened up to brownie cake consistency and it made less than 2 cups. I used haas avocados. Perhaps you meant the large variety?

    • Hass avocados are ideal for pudding, but there is going to be some variation in yield due to size differences. It sounds like maybe yours were a bit smaller than the ones I used and yielded a richer, denser pudding.

  4. It was delicious! But, the next batch was adjusted to the avocados I have. I simply added more coconut milk. This is my treat for an instant breakfast. Chocolate for breakfast! It keeps me satisfied for 5 hours before I am hungry again.

    • I think the chocolate chips contribute to a true pudding flavor, but you could try leaving them out and adding more cacao powder and maple syrup. I’m not sure how well it would work, so if you give it a shot please let me know how it works out.
