There Is An Arctic Oasis In My Mailbox
Summer may swelter on, but it’s no match for the avalanche of books that have been delivered these past few weeks. Seriously, folks, Christmas in July is real – at least it is at the end of my dirt road. And now it’s my turn to play elf.
I’ve sorted, I’ve bookmarked, I’ve wiped drool off my sleeve, and what I have for you today are my top picks for the season. These three most recent arrivals are like the cherry on a giant homemade sundae, and though I originally asked you which ONE you wanted me to give away, I decided to toss all three in the pot! In no particular order, they are . . .
You guys, I don’t even know where to begin. Just about every dish you’ve ever adored can be found in these pages, only yummier and free of processed junk. The photography is a feast for the eyes – sure to inspire you even on the days you don’t want to cook! My favorite part: Though Danielle’s vibrance is most definitely behind every recipe, she’s also right in front, sharing the story of her transformation.
Diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in 2007, Danielle of the blog Against All Grain endured multiple hospitalizations, severe weight loss, thinning hair, and other problems. Her doctors gave her no hope for recovery – the best they could offer were heavy duty medications that might alleviate some of her symptoms. Through her own research, though, Danielle decided to change her diet in hopes of regaining her health, and it worked!
As you can see in the before/after photos, she is now the thriving mom of a gorgeous little boy, not to mention a ridiculously amazing self-taught chef. The Against All Grain Cookbook is a paleo-friendly culmination of her determination to regain her health without feeling like she was being cheated at every meal. And who could with recipes like these?

If “Bacon Makes Everything Better” is one of your life motto’s, this new book from Matt & Stacy of Paleo Parents may induce bliss. Every recipe incorporates lard, bacon or some kind of pork in ways that are sure to make your mouth water. For example, those decadent brownies in the middle are made with lard and topped with ice cream/salted caramel bacon sauce! - Fried “Corn” Dogs – really!
- Sweet treats made luxuriously rich with lard, such as Grain-Free Pie Crust, Salted Mocha Biscotti, Chocolate Fudge, and Maple Lard Scones,
- Instructions on how to properly BBQ and smoke your meats as well as recipes to make your own sauces
- Instructions for curing your own bacon, pancetta and even home-made sausage better than store bought
- Perfect Pork Chops
If your family grimaces when you pull kraut out of the fridge it might be time to move beyond the basics. This book will inspire you with recipes for homemade red wine vinegar, salami, kombucha sangria and yogurt cheese. There are even recipes for “shrubs,” which are fermented drinks I’ve never heard of! Apparently they date back to Colonial times and come in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions, like:
