Daddypotamus: What Do You Do When God’s Answer is Delayed?

As most of you know, we’ve had a vision for the next phase for a while now. It involves a bigger house on some land, and becoming a community hub where families come together to eat, swap recipes and health tips, and like-minded people call on the name of the Lord in worship and prayer.

It’s important to note how easy it is to lose your way. To focus on the wrong part of the picture. I’ve been guilty of that lately. Driving to my men’s group tonight, the Holy Spirit pointed out how I’d been focused on man-made opportunities and hanging my hopes on them, rather than maintaining my focus upon the One who solves problems and answers prayer.

The Setting

There are a few more days left for people to sign contracts on homes and receive the $6-8k from the U.S. government. It’s a feeding frenzy. Buyers are literally putting contracts on multiple homes simultaneously in order to ensure that at least one of them goes through for the right price before the deadline. I know this because we received an offer on our house last week and were told that he’d put offers elsewhere to hedge his bets. He was going to walk away with one of them, no matter what.

Well, he bid low for that reason, and we didn’t accommodate him. He held firm on his original offer after we countered, and so far we’ve heard nothing else. We know that more people are urgently looking to buy a home right now because of the government’s incentive. The problem is, I started focusing too much on that deadline as our window of opportunity, and began to feel the pressure and the disappointment creep in as the deadline approaches and we have no workable offer.

Tonight, God reminded me that He never promised we’d sell our house before this government deadline. We attached our hope to it because it seemed like the ideal vehicle for delivering the perfect buyer. But in the end, whether it happens this week or next month, we have a Father who provides for our needs. We can get all torn up over the disappointment of not having our expectations met, or we can readjust our vision to focus upon what REALLY matters – that He is present and available to us. It’s equally amazing and frustrating that God is so wise that He often does nothing when we are CERTAIN He should.

I’m not saying an offer won’t come in tonight or tomorrow morning. That’s precisely what I’m praying for. But I will suffer needlessly if I continue to focus upon a man-made season of opportunity as my best chance at results. God is not a man that He should lie. His ways are above our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts. We cannot fathom why.

But let me close with a promise from Scripture. We read it in my men’s group.

God’s promises

‘Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know.’ (Jeremiah 33:3)

The goodness of God is that A) He will answer when I call; B) not only will He answer, but He’ll ALSO tell me great and unsearchable things I do not know. In other words, when I call out to Him, not only does He answer, which is exactly what I want Him to do – He also shows me more than I bargained for. He shares His secrets with me. He shows me what is unsearchable, i.e. what I could never discover on my own.

Our prayer

Father, we’re calling out to You as a family, putting our lives to some level on public display. And we’re asking You to show Yourself faithful, good, abundant, and able to do more than we could ever ask, think, or imagine.

For we’re not just after the sale of our house. That’s mission impossible #1. Then there’s the question of “where do we live?” And beyond that there’s the question of “how will we have the provision to get the property our hearts desire?

We’re many steps from a mission complete. And there are SERIOUS temptations to be discouraged, disheartened, and altogether disgusted. It’s my prayer that God gives us the grace to see this through and to trust in Him even when what we hope for is still invisible.

These are the times when I am grateful there is someone more level-headed thinking for our family than me. Love you, Daniel.

Question: How do you know that God doesn’t want you to just stay where you are at right now so he (it?) can provide a BETTER opportunity later for you?

    • Good question, Richard. I doubt I’ll be able to convey all my thought processes behind this, but I’ll give it a whirl.

I know our house is too small for our family. I know we’re expecting another child in September. I know that my wife prepares 90% of our meals from scratch and has to spend too much time cleaning all the countertops just to have room to cook twice in a day.

I know that my mother-in-law has a rent house that is bigger than ours and has a much better sized kitchen. I know that it’s available to us beginning in July. I know that we’ve put our house on the market NOW because we’d rather have liquid assets when it comes time to buy.

So we have a set of plans that are open ended. We WANT to buy our dream property and skip the move to the rent house. BUT we have to move one way or the other, so we’ve got the rent house as Plan B.

God’s been developing a renewed understanding in me of what I should understand about and expect from Him. He wants me to seek Him and in the process of doing so to boldly pour out my heart’s desires. When something REALLY moves my heart, it moves His heart as well.

I consider myself having two tasks in the intercession / prayer department: 1) continue reading Scripture about the inheritance God has given His sons and daughters; 2) pray according to the revelation I receive about the inheritance that is mine.

There is such an amazing abundance available to those who are joint heirs with Jesus. Not going the “name it claim it prosperity faith movement” way there, but it’s true. What I’m finding is that God is MUCH more generous and abundant in His gifts than I ever thought possible in the past.

To answer your question, I absolutely don’t know yet what His timing is on the property of our dreams. We’re taking it to Him and believing Him for it because we’ve brought it to Him over and over again and told Him to change our desires if they don’t line up with His will. We’ve offered our desires to be exchanged for His. So as long as they remain intense desires, we come to Him believing that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

And honestly, there are places where I could be off in my thinking. I’m asking Him to actively correct me where my thinking is off-base. I’m willing to be wrong. It’s more important to me to line up with Truth than to have my way. So I come to Him confidently not because I know exactly how to do all this but because I’m willing to be shaped and molded by Him, and I know He loves and honors that.

  3. Here’s some irony for you. My husband and I are trying to buy a house right now, and we could have qualified for that buyer’s mortgage $$. So we were trying to rush the process to get the money, but never could find the right house. I suppose we could in the next few days, but since we’re leaving for vacation on Saturday and our parked car was the victim of a hit and run last weekend, I really don’t see it happening. Point being, I think we’re going to buy a house when it’s right for us and that is apparently going to happen outside this man-made opportunity. Best of luck to you guys in your process! It won’t happen overnight but it will happen for you.

    says:

I remember how down you were when God closed the door on one of your jobs. But then shortly thereafter you got an even better job, and it was such a blessing! Dad was in the same situation. If he hadn’t lost his job in OK, the family wouldn’t have been close by to enjoy baby Katie (and her parents). He definitely knows what He’s doing, but He’s not on our time schedule. It always frustrates me when He doesn’t meet my expectations, but I always find out later that His plan was so much better! I’ve been asking God to provide something spectacular for you guys. I’m asking that He’ll make a way for you to get the land, too, or to have an even more amazing house/property.
He likes to surprise us with good gifts far beyond what we think we deserve. :)

  5. I just want to say that it’s very possible that we’ll look foolish at some point, having publicized our desires in such a way that NOT possessing them at some point would become embarrassing. But that is the risk we have chosen to take. We are willing to share some of our desires, hopes, and dreams with you. We may have those things corrected by God. So be it.

I know how great the temptation to withhold one’s dreams and hopes from the public for fear of embarrassment. But in the real world, we live like Joseph – energized by a call we don’t fully understand, but eventually accomplish by means we never expected.
