Review: Wean Green Leakproof Glass Storage Containers

Is your refrigerator a hodge podge of plastic containers, jars, wraps, and bags? Do you want to upgrade to a healthier option that is not only safer than plastic, but more functional and durable? Then you’ll want to read on.

I recently received a set of Wean Green containers as a gift, and, um, they are AMAZING.

Why I Love These Containers

1. Glass is versatile. Wean Green glass storage containers can go from the oven (up to 250F) into the fridge or freezer.

Cooking and storing with the same container means less time and fewer dirty dishes! That’s a win/win in my book. (Fyi, the lids cannot go in the oven, just the actual containers.)

2. The lids are leak proof.

Each glass cube can be sealed air-tight with a leak-proof silicone seal that is removable for easy washing. You can grab them from the fridge and toss them in a bag as you run out the door and not have to worry about spills. They are seriously leak-proof, too. I have put all kinds of things in them that I would have once considered a “no-no” for transport and they’ve worked beautifully

3. The lids will last. And last. And last.

They’ve passed the kid test by enduring more than 3 million uses per tab and they continue to seal air tight. So when your toddler refuses his expensive toys in favor of clamping and unclamping the lid to your new glass containers, you can just let him clamp to his heart’s content. They’ll still work when he’s done!

If you’re wondering which ones I got specifically, they’re listed below along with what I use them for:

    • I love glass but they are pricey and I’m trying to overhaul everything with healthier options. Another obstacle with glass is that most glass food containers are round and they don’t fit well in the refrigerator. I love these square containers!! They stack easily, are space-saving and efficient. You can squeeze these next to each other with no wasted space!

  1. I love these containers. I don’t have any…but I’ve seen them…and want some! 🙂 I’m slowly in the process of replacing all of our old plastic containers, as well. It’s slow moving…but, I’m getting there!

  2. My biggest obstacle to going all glass is price. I have 2 full (hugs) sets of plastic and I need that in glass. It feels wasteful to get rid of the plastic, but little at a time it will go into the play area about I’ll replace with glass. Thanks for the opportunity to try to win. 🙂

    • I too found glass to be a bit pricey til I discovered yard and church sales. Thrift stores are also another place to shop for glass containers at really cheap prices.. I just found 2 corning ware white dishes with really tight fitting lids for only $2 each! It pays to shop around unless you win!

  3. Have successfully transitioned several plastic kitchen storage containers to glass, but definitely want more!! Love knowing that nothing bad is leaching into my food when I use glass!!! It’s more attractive and easier to see into as well!! And glass can be sterilized which makes it a much healthier alternative!!

  10. I have a hard time keeping track of what’s what in the Fridge. Part of that is the hodge podge of containers we have, and part of it is not knowing how to label them well… I hate opening the door and seeing a mess of container! (and our shelf layout is really weird and not very helpful…)

  12. We have a hard time keeping track of what’s in the fridge and how old things are so we end up tossing out food. But plastic containers are lightweight because my dad can’t handle having to lift heavy glass containers, so hopefully these aren’t that heavy. Plus, my mom just automatically buys plastic containers because they’re less expensive and she works in retail. It’s a convenience thing for her more than anything else. I’d love to have glass containers. I have mason jars I use for drinks and to store salad and left over sauces and gravies in. I can’t even get my mom away from using Styrofoam! I hate the stuff and I keep telling her that it’s bad, but she still uses it all the time. We need lighter plates, that her biggest complaint about ceramic plates I think. I’d love to be able to toss out all of the stuff we shouldn’t be using and replace it with better options!

    • I am fast moving up in my seventies and taking heavy stoneware dishes from upper shelves has gotten to be quite an annoyance if not a problem. But I have replaced my heavy dishes with Corelle. They have many designs, are lighter, and, although I have dropped a few on my concrete floor topped with cheap linoleum, none have broken or cracked. The Replacements website has many choices of designs and styles (from more traditional to modern) and the more recent styles can be found at many discount stores.

  15. My biggest obstacle in going to glass is that you are very limited in regards to the shape of the containers. I buy a huge amount of vegetables and sometimes use plastic containers made for a loaf of bread to store vegetables such as asparagus, celery, etc. But I want to transition to glass as the benefits far outweigh the use of plastic. I have already replaced some of my plastic with glass storage containers and want more. This set looks just right.

    • Hi Shiree,

I was nervous about that too. So far I’m doing ok by filling the jar 3/4 full and laying them on their sides to freeze. Once frozen I stand them up. Since doing this I haven’t cracked any jars.

  22. I love glass for storage and have been changing over for several years. One way I get good jars is by buying foods that come in good jars and always keep them. The buying of food in glass is as important as storing homemade and homegrown in it. I still need one of those good dehydrators for condensing foods into smaller space and longer keeping because I do grow some stuff and am adding a lot of new fruit this year.

I like to have free counterspace and my ferments are just sitting there. I’ve thought about using beautiful jars and crocks and decorating the living room with them.

Also, all the flipping lids! Where and how is the clearest way to store them. I’ve tried standardizing containers so that all the lids are the same, and yet, the errant jar is so tempting…

Here is a question I’ve been wanting to ask someone: What do you do for plates and bowls for your kiddos? Do you use plastic, glass, steel, wood? I’m curious. We have a ton of small, plastic plates for the kids. They don’t break! 🙂

  35. My biggest obstacle is space. I have gotten rid of most of my plastic, although not all. I use mostly leftover jars and a few mason jars but the size is not suitable to many things. 36. I definitely need to up grade to these. One of our biggest storage challenges in the kitchen is keeping the lids and containers together in the container cupboard…always a mess and you can never find the right lid!

  37. Affordability is my biggest problem. One of my proudest solutions was instead of buying a pitcher for drinks (couldn’t find one with a lid that fit in my fridge well) I bought milk from the organic store and use it for water or tea… Fits on my fridge door perfectly, and was very cheap! I had surgery and radiation treatments last year for ovarian cancer, and am trying to be much more careful about what we eat, wear, and clean with. This beautiful set would be a tremendous help!

  50. Kitchen Storage Obstacle: overcoming the simplicity that plastic provides in a house full of children and since it is so abundant and versatile. It is so easy to stack and store many plastic containers to reuse and not care if they get broken. I wish my glass containers were more stackable and store-able when not in use.
They take up so much space, and since I cook all the time and have a bigger family, I need many containers.

  63. My biggest obstacle would have to be space – when not in use glass containers take up lots of room (I’m staring at some clean mason jars sitting inopportunely on the counter right now!) but they also take up valuable cupboard space. I do my best!

  64. My biggest obstacle with kitchen storage is definitely space. A have a couple of dreaded corner cabinets in the place we rent. There isn’t a lazy susan, but instead a six-inch opening that goes into deep storage. Such a tease 🙁 We are trying to upgrade our rubbermaid plastics to glass.

  65. My biggest obstacle is getting some of the containers to ‘fit’ or stack well, so there can be wasted space. I have despised plastic for a long time and use glass as much as possible. My husband said I save too many glass jars and I know I do, but try to keep several sizes. Storage is the problem. I also use my canning jars a lot.

These containers, being square, are the answer to my needs! They use space more efficiently, (as opposed to round bowls,) and with being able to go from the oven, to fridge or freezer is really practical. And the other attributes, being leak-proof with silicone lids, are definitely a win/win item.

    Thank you for offering them…..

    • I’m not sure the lids are silicone. I think they are plastic, with a silicaone ring around the sealing area. I’m looking for some 100% non-plastic containers myself but it’s hard. Plastic is really pretty useful it seems!!

I’ve tried the reusable bags, but as anyone with two active boys will tell you, those poor lunch bags are not treated very kindly. After everything cools off I package it all in containers and freeze them for lunches. I have just two meals a day and they are breakfast (usually eggs from our chickens and a cup of HM bone broth with 1/2 of my lunch.) Hubby only has one meal. Lunch. So I tend to pack a lot in his containers. I label everything with a piece of masking tape and a marker.

I purchased big (32 oz) mason jars a set of 10 for approximately $12. I cut celery and carrots and put them standing on end in the large mason jar and put the jar in the veggie drawer. To me, they seem to take up less space than the rectangles anyway. I also purchased the smaller (16 oz) jars so I can make soups and freeze them. The jars store in the freezer and can be reheated in a pan of water or in the microwave without the metal rings on the top. We also use the mason jars as glasses to drink out of so I only need one cubboard of space, inexpensive and dual purpose.

  98. My biggest obstacle when it comes to kitchen storage is having enough storage containers to organize everything. I buy a lot of my baking supplies in bulk, so I have a bunch of bags with writing on them to identify what is inside…Super not attractive! I pledge for my elementary school, and I pledge to makeover many of these plastic bag storage so-called containers into glass. Thanks for the fabulous giveaway!

  100. Hello
I LOVE using glass instead of plastic….but my issue is my husband. He doesn’t care if we put things in an old bread bag! I have been using mason jars and that has been good but would love to try some different shapes. Recently I was setting up for a rummage sale to benefit my friends adoption and I came across and older glass gallon jar that people use for storing cookies and candies at Christmas….. it has the rubber seal and clasp on it I I felt like I hit the jackpot! Looking forward to no more ziploc plastic in my fridge!
    thanks for the opportunity!

  102. My biggest struggle is finding containers that utilize my refrigerator space efficiently. It’s hard to keep things visible when they are stacked on top and in front of themselves.

  103. I love these containers! My biggest obstacle is organization. I always have problems finding the size I need to store leftovers in.

  104. The only things that I have in plastic ate the plastic bags that I put produce in at the store and I love ziplock bags, it will be hard to get away from those. I have looked into to some washable options but they aren’t clear. I have been using glass containers with lids that snap on. They have a rubber ring so they seal. I love them but would love to have some silicone lids.

  105. The reason to adore these containers, for this avid healthy mama cook, is that you can see what’s in them. I am a single mum of two teenagers and we are on the move! Food gets wasted. These could allow me to not only see what’s yummy thing I made but the kids can pop it in the microwave without worrying about any awful plastic hormones.
That and saving our dear planet.

  108. my biggest obstacle is my husband, who hates plastic storage pieces and keeps throwing them away. He wouldn’t do that with glass: then my biggest problem would be keeping him from claiming them for his own.

  109. Our biggest challenge is packing lunches for schools. We have really not found a reusable alternative to plastic sandwich bags. I have most of the ones on the market currently and they have a variety of flaws. I am trying to make my own, but the bread gets a bit stale after being in the fridge for awhile. Glass is too heavy for the already too-heavy backpack my middle schooler carries and even his small lunchbag barely fits. For home use, however glass is great. I put all my nut milk in mason jars and use glass for leftovers all the time. It is just the portable school options that need some new brilliant ideas….

    • Jason, use a Sharpie. It washes off easily with a little rubbing alcohol. Sharpies work on Mason jar lids, too, and clean just as easily.

  110. Labeling is definitely a problem! I wish I had a green, easy way of labeling my containers! I just pulled out a jar of leftover chili thinking it was my homemade pizza sauce. I piled it on my pizza crust before I realized my mistake!!

  111. I would love to move to all glass storage. It’s a challenge to do on a tight budget, but I’m doing it a little at a time. I just seperatwd out all of our worn out plastic containers & am left with less than half of what we had. So now is a perfect time to switch. I’ve been shopping around.

  113. I try to use plastic as little as possible but the glass is pricey and only so many things fit in my Mason jars.

  114. I love glass storage, but it can get pricey. My fridge is a mess, lots of fresh veggies, cheeses, organic raw milk, jars of water kefir, kombucha and Jun tea, little containers of applesauce and fruit, and more. I just have not been able to come up with a good solution for organizing and storing. 🙁

  116. My biggest challenge is that we invested in a bunch of pyrex storage containers only to find they leak after a few months, the tops having become loose 🙁 that and I’m always losing lids to the glass jars we reuse!

  117. We have cut down on our plastic a lot. The biggest obstacle in switching all the way is the weight of glass and my fear that my precious kiddos would break something and get hurt on the sharp edges! Thank goodness Pyrex is tough to break.

  118. My biggest obstacle is the breakability of glass….since there are two “big kids” in my house who want to grab the leftovers, toss them into their back packs, and head out the door.

  119. This is so cool! We reuse our glass jars from pickles, mustard, and anything else that won’t leave a weird smell for our food to pick up. Our kids have learned to be careful with glass so that is good. I am going to switch our left over dishes first. These look great! Thank you for all you share to help everyone 🙂

  120. This is what I’ve been trying to do. I have my food(noodles, cereal, rice, flour) stored in the big plastic containers. For the past few months, I’ve thrifting to find glass containers to use instead of the plastic. I’ve been successful somewhat. This would be great!! Talk about a money saver…..

  122. I never wanted to use plastic. For years friends and family thought I was crazy. I listened to them and ordered some plastic. My storage was probably half glass, half plastic ten years ago. Today maybe one fourth of my storage containers and bowls are plastic. Soon it will be down to zero. I love the glass. I always have. I don’t like the staining on the plastic bowls. I also don’t like the taste of water in a plastic cup.
Glass is a healthier and safer option.

  126. I live in a very small apartment. I have been transitioning from plastic by using canning jars, and recycled jars, but round containers do not fit well in my cupboards and refrigerators, both of which are small. I also have trouble reaching things in the cupboards because I am vertically challenged. Counter space is also at a premium.

  127. I have been going to estate sales, junk sales, garage sales, antique stores and finding fun new and antique glass storage containers. I do keep some plastic containers for my adult children to bring home leftovers in. I also have some that I got from The Container Store that I use for my homemade stocks that are BPA free.

  133. I have been upgrading to glass little by little… but my husband keeps losing them or “misplacing them” 😐
My greatest challenge is that my fridge is the oldest thing in the planet! (no kidding)
Before marrying, my dad found the fridge in the trash and gave it to my single husband and he took it because they (he and his roomates) had three little fridges. Now, we havent been able to buy a normal fridge… and it does not have drawers to put greens, so I have to put them in plastic bags which I do not like…

  134. My fiancé and I will be married in one week and we asked for only stainless steel utensils/pots/pans/bowls and glass cookware and storage- we tried to make the most of this once-in-a-life experience of registering, knowing that we will be getting things that will last and not hurt us! We are excited to slowly build up to more storage options- right now we collect glass jars from sun-dried tomatoes and use them for herbs and tea most of the time! I love Mommypotamus and her giveaways!

  135. I was sure I commented before but cannot find my comment. My biggest obstacle is feeling guilty for throwing away my Tupperware. My mother sold it for 25 years so I grew up with it and spent many years acquiring the latest and greatest pieces. I have concluded that I will have to save my favorite Tupperware canisters for storing craft supplies and then just close my eyes and toss the rest! I use 1/2 gallon and quart Mason jars for canisters now and have a couple of Pampered Chef refrig dishes (which are expensive).
