CAUTION: Flu Shots May Double Your Chance Of Getting Sick

Should I get my 9-month old son a flu shot or not? Seems to be a little bit of debate on this one…

~ Andrew

Great question, Andrew! I am not a doctor so I cannot say what you should do, but personally there are several reasons I do not vaccinate my children against the flu. (Obviously this is my perspective – I encourage you to do additional research and talk to a healthcare provider you trust. )

#1  Healthy People Need To Get Sick Once In Awhile

What Do Vaccines DoAccording to some experts, we need to stop thinking of germs as predators from the outside and start thinking of them as scavengers within. They are not attacking us, they are opportunists that live off the messes we leave in our own bodies. Gross, I know, but true.

Most of the time we live in relative peace with a host of pathogenic germs, but too much stress, or sugar, or whatever knocks our body off balance biochemically, leaving a glut of food that one germ or another prefers. When this happens germs take us up on our generous offer and have a nice old sit down dinner. Does this make us sick? Yes and no.

Germs are notorious for excreting all kinds of toxic waste after they eat, and this can make us feel tired. For the most part, though, the peak of infection is usually marked by no symptoms at all. It is only when our body begins to fight back that we get “sick,” because the fact of the matter is that fever, diarrhea and other unpleasant things are not what microbes do to us, it’s what we do to THEM. Our bodies are creating inflammation, which is the cure, not the disease.

“Inflammation, as the word implies, is like a fire in the body which burns up the waste and debris, along with the germs which feed on waste and debris, and cleanses the body. Thus it is our immune system which causes us to become sick, by creating inflammation to drive out infection and renew us.”

Here’s the kicker: The stronger our immune system, the stronger the illness. Bouts of intense illness – or “healing crisis” as they are sometimes called – indicate the presence of a thorough housekeeper [aka immune system]. Chronic symptoms of “feeling bad” and fatigue without periods of acute illness, on the other hand, are signs of low-grade toxicity in the body – the result of our housekeeper being too weak to do her job”

Vaccines: Questions All Parents Should Ask. Ted Koren p. 107

Don’t just take my word for it, though, even this doctor says fevers are a child’s friend and may actually help them recover faster! I disagree with her on pain relievers, though. See this post to find out why.

So what does this have to do with vaccines in 5 words or less? Vaccines may cripple our inflammatory response.

Okay, I’m obviously going to need more than 5 words.

#2  How Vaccines Work Explains Why They Don’t (Really) Work

What do vaccines do?According to Stephen Marini, PhD, our immune systems are actually comprised of two sub-systems. The humoral system mainly recognizes pathogens and produces antibodies which prevent them from entering cells – this is the TH1 system. (source)

The cell-mediated system “primarily destroys, digests and expels foreign antigens out of the body through the activity of its cells found in the thymus, tonsils, adenoids, spleen, lymph nodes and lymph system throughout the body” – this is the TH2 system. (source) The TH2 system is what turns up the thermostat in our bodies to clean up when things get ugly inside.

The Th1 system is most effective against viral, gram-negative bacterial and fungal infections, and tuberculosis. It is also the system which digests cancer cells within our bodies.  Th2 function mainly deals with gram-positive bacterial and parasitic infections. Both are needed, but they must function together in harmony.

So what does this look like usually? In a healthy person, TH1 function is dominant. Pathogens are hunted by stealth ninja T cells, digested and escorted to the exits constantly. Vaccination turns this balance on it’s head, making the TH2 system dominant. That’s a HUGE problem, and here’s why:

“A Th2 response to a specific virus infection will specifically suppress Th1 cells from becoming activated against the same virus. With the resulting failure to generate a Th1 response, cells infected with virus cannot be destroyed.” (source, emphasis mine)

So basically, vaccines may actually cripple our ability to expel viruses. Sure, they can “help” us produce antibodies that allow fewer cells to be infected, but based on this understanding the cells that do become infected are literally paralyzed from doing anything about it. In that sense, vaccines do “work.” They keep us from experiencing the sensations we associate with illness, but there may be a cost.

According to Dr. Marini, infected cells cannot fight well when the TH2 system is dominant, so they just try to manage until they get really sick and tired of being sick and tired. Then they start trying to game the system for some relief.

“Chronically infected cells, like nerve cells, can occasionally trick the immune system into reacting to and attacking similar nerve cells resulting in autoimmune disease such as multiple sclerosis, Guillain Barré, etc. Cells chronically infected with live vaccine viruses also risk having the viruses mutate, trade genes with each other, as well as interact with the host cell DNA.¹”

In other words, vaccines may work in the short term to block the infection of some cells and reduce the incidence of acute illness, but in doing so they may very well trigger autoimmune reactions, prevent our TH1 systems from dealing effectively with the rogue cancer cells we all have, and modify the immune system in ways we can’t predict. They also negatively affect herd immunity, but that’s another post!

Vaccine makers have made attempts to stimulate TH1 responses instead of TH2, but so far they haven’t been able to. (source) Of course, they continue to maintain that current vaccines are safe and effective, but are they?

This brings me to my next point, which is that . . .

#3  The Flu Shot May Be More Dangerous Than The Flu

what do vaccines do 4The 2012-2013 vaccine has been formulated with three strains: Influenza A (H3N2), Influenza B and Influenza A (H1N1). (UPDATE: The 2013-2014 vaccine has four strains: H1N1 and H3N2, and two influenza B strains.)

In 2012, a study linked the H1N1 vaccine with a tenfold increase in miscarriages over previous flu vaccines.

Additionally, according to this article “Dr. Hugh Fudenberg, a world-leading immunogeneticist, has extensively studied the effects of the flu vaccine on neurological health. The results of his research indicate that an individual has a 10-time greater chance of getting Alzheimer’s disease after receiving five flu shots in the course of their life compared to individuals who have had zero to one shot in their lifetime.

Dr. Fudenberg and other researchers believe the increased risk of Alzheimer’s is a result of the combination of mercury and aluminum within the flu vaccine.” (emphasis mine)

Others have drawn the same conclusion, including Dr. Bernard Windham, who has testified before the FDA regarding his findings. According to Windham, mercury toxicity blocks sulfate oxidation which allows cysteine levels to build up in the brain and CNS to neurotoxic levels. He cites numerous studies which have found elevated cysteine levels – about 500% higher than controls – in patients with Alzheimer’s, ALS, Parkinson’s, Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and autism. (source)

Mercury exposure can also cause memory loss, depression, ADD, oral health problems, digestive imbalances, respiratory problems, cardiovascular diseases and many more serious health problems. (source) Note: Single use flu vaccine vials may not contain mercury. The inhaled vaccine never does. (source) Single use vials with a pink syringe plunger rod in the pre-filled syringe contain only “trace” amounts of mercury – these are the made for children from 6-36 month old. They are made in limited quantities so children often receive the mercury-containing vaccines.

So, it often contains mercury AND it’s risky for pregnant women, despite the fact that this is one of the “vulnerable” populations targeted for vaccination? Interesting.

#4  Oh, And It May Double Your Risk Of Getting The Flu!

What happens when an individual compromises their TH1 immune function to be “protected” from the 3 strains of flu that came in this year’s vaccine? They’re vulnerable to the hundreds of other strains that will circulate this year, of course!

Back in the spring of 2009, just when the swine flu hysteria was building, a Canadian study revealed that people, who had received a regular, seasonal flu shot, were twice as likely to catch swine flu. This was initially passed off as unproven but, lo and behold, in 2010 the results of several epidemiologic investigations revealed that seasonal flu shot DID increase the risk of catching swine flu.

The four studies, which were conducted by public health agencies in Canada, involved about 2,700 people in all, and each one had the same result: if you got the seasonal flu shot, you were more likely to get the swine flu. The researchers wrote in PLoS Medicine:

” … Estimates from all four studies (which included about 1,200 laboratory-confirmed pH1N1 cases and 1,500 controls) showed that prior recipients of the 2008–09 TIV [seasonal flu shot] had approximately 1.4–2.5 times increased chances of developing pH1N1 illness that needed medical attention during the spring–summer of 2009 compared to people who had not received the TIV.”

Does The Flu Shot Increase Your Risk Of Getting The Flu?

#5  There Is Evidence Of Widespread Manipulation Of Flu Vaccine Data

In an analysis of 50 published studies conducted by the well-respected, independent Cochrane Review, researchers found that only studies funded by pharmaceutical companies found a benefit. Their analysis revealed a far different conclusion:

  • “reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin”
  • “there is evidence of widespread manipulation of conclusions”
  • there is no evidence that vaccination prevents viral transmission in adults (so much for getting the vaccine to protect herd immunity!)

#6   There Are Safer Ways To Boost Immune Function

According to this article, supplementing Vitamin D is actually MORE effective at preventing the flu than the vaccine. You can find more tips for preventing colds and flu’s naturally here and here. I recommend using the acerola powder mentioned in the second article over a traditional Vitamin C, supplement, which is likely to be synthetic.

Oh, And Did I Mention They Don’t Work?

A “large-scale, systematic review of 51 studies, published in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews in 2006, found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo in preventing influenza in children under two. The studies involved 260,000 children, age 6 to 23 months.” (source)

Another Cochrane Review found that vaccinating nursing-home workers did not reduce the number of confirmed flu cases among residents. (source)

Here’s an excerpt from the study’s conclusion:

“No effect was shown for specific outcomes: laboratory-proven influenza, pneumonia, and death from pneumonia. An effect was shown for the nonspecific outcomes of influenza-like illness, primary care consultations for influenza-like illness, and all-cause mortality in patients 60 years and older. These nonspecific outcomes are difficult to interpret because influenza-like illness includes many pathogens, and winter influenza contributes less than 10 percent to all-cause mortality in patients 60 years and older. The key interest is preventing laboratory-proven influenza in patients 60 years and older, pneumonia, and deaths from pneumonia, and we cannot draw such conclusions. The identified studies are at high risk of bias.”

Do you vaccinate for the flu? Why or why not?

Wonderfully written–thank you for taking the time to do this. I often feel like a lone voice trying to share this message with a society that just blindly accepts flu vaccinations, and all other vaccinations! My brother was severely damaged by his childhood vaccines, and my mom was one of the parents who helped push Iowa bill through, banning mercury in childhood vaccines. Iowa is now one of the states initially showing a reduced rate of autism in the younger children!!

So thankful for you for sharing this message.

  2. Jess says:

I haven’t done any vaccines on my kids. However: my twins came down with whooping cough a couple of weeks ago. In the middle of the night when they were coughing and gasping for breath, doubled over throwing up with the cough and couldn’t even hold themselves up, I doubted every decision I’ve made. They are only 1 year old and to go through this was so difficult! I can’t even express how sad it has been to watch. I can definitely see how a small infant can die of whooping cough. Since then I’ve gone back and read some of the reasons why I initially made the decision and have told myself I did what I thought was best at the time. I’m hoping someone else can reassure me…I’m not sure what I think anymore.

    • Theresa says:

I went through pertussis with 2 of my children as well. It was horrific, as you describe. They were my 2 year old and 5 year old. BUT, we believe they contracted it from my 11 year old, who was immunized and got it from a girl on her soccer team who was immunized, and my 8 year old, who was not immunized did not get it. I really don’t think the vax had anything to do with it! Don’t beat yourself up. Yes, it’s a horrible illness, and yes, I agree, it’s easy to see how infants can die from it. But I don’t think the shot is the preventative.

    • Nicole says:

I contracted whooping cough during the last week of my pregnancy. Our son became sick at 2 weeks old. I haven’t vaccinated our 2 older children since our first had some complications with her 4 month vaccinations. I can relate to your comment. Our son’s illness was so incredibly scary, especially as I knew how he was feeling. I am an adult and was still coughing until I became sick! Several times I wondered if I’d pass out as my airway was so blocked. Awful stuff.

    • Jim says:

You did the right thing. My family went through a year of hell after my son had the flu-mist. Had your child been vaccine injured, you would have really beat yourself up. Especially since the mumps vaccine is as ineffective as the flu vaccine.

    • kristi says:

My fully vaxed kid started pertussis in my house. She passed it to my other fully vaxed and my non vaxed kids. She also passed it to my fully vaxed neighbor. The fully vaxed kids had a way worse case of it than the non vaxed kids. When cdc called me the confirmed that “unfortunately we are seeing a lot of fully vaxed people coming down with pertussis.”

    • lauren says:

There was a recent outbreak on the west coast this past summer of whooping cough and 70% of the kids who got it were actually vaccinated. So if it reassures you at all- the vaccine does not actually protect against the disease- there are 2 strains and from what I understand the one that is around is not the one kids are vaccinated for.

    • andie says:

sorry to hear about the whooping cough – our homeopath was a great help – quick improvement in symptoms when my daughter had whooping cough.

  3. Elizabeth says:

Ironic this got posted today, Because a friend of mine is in the icu fighting for his life against influenza a. And, he GOT the flu shot this year!! His kidneys are failing, he cant breathe, and he’s intubated and on a Ecmo machine. It’s very very serious. I know he is an outlier, and he didn’t lead the healthiest lifestyle in the world, but he was (is) not immuno compromised with anything and not young or old. Just a normal thirty something.

I guess what I’m saying is that it is often framed as you having nothing to lose by getting he shot… But that it could prevent it. But, if that’s not the case, then it truly is a travesty to not at least truly inform people and let them make an informed choice. Not that it’s a big surprise to most of us who read blogs like this, but it’s just such a shame that there’s not more transparency and honesty in he medical establishment.

  4. Maggie Johnston says:

It appears that a paragraph or end of sentence is missing in section 3#. I would appreciate seeing this section updated. :-)

“In other words, mercury toxicity blocks sulfate oxidation, which…”

    Great article and summary!

    • Heather says:

Thank you for pointing that out, Maggie! The information I intended to reference there is actually found in the paragraph above:

“According to Windham, mercury toxicity blocks sulfate oxidation which allow cysteine levels to build up in the brain and CNS to neurotoxic levels. He cites numerous studies which have found elevated cysteine levels – about 500% higher than controls – in patients with Alzheimer’s, ALS, Parkinson’s, Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and autism.”

Looks like I lost my place while thinking and typed the same thing twice :)

  5. Gabriel says:

Thank you so much for sharing this! But just thought you should know that point #4’s heading has a typo. “Msy” double your risk

    • Heather says:

Thank you, Gabriel! I damaged my hand a couple months ago and can only type with 9 fingers right now. I’m now embarrassingly prone to typos and always appreciate the opportunity to correct them!

  6. Kelly Morris says:

Do you have any information on tamiflu? We didn’t get the flu shot and now have influenza a. My 16 month old caught it first and we aren’t using tamiflu for him. My 7 year ok’d seems to be coming down with it and we are considering tamiflu because she is older and I’m not as worried about side effects. Perhaps I should just let her housekeeper do her thing though. So hard to see your children hurt though.

    • Heather says:

Hi Kelly! According to this article, in 2008 the FDA reviewed “reports of abnormal behavior and other brain effects in more than 1,800 children who had taken the flu medicine Tamiflu.

The symptoms have included convulsions, delirium or delusions, and in Japan, five deaths have been reported in children under 16 as a result of neurological or psychiatric problems. Four were fatal falls, and one was a brain infection in a patient with leukemia.

There have also been nine deaths among older teens and adults, attributed to neuropsychiatric problems or brain infections.

  7. Sunny Espanet says:

Thanks for this! I’ve been following the controversy for a time, and always like a refresh on the facts. I have one concern I would like to find someone address: what about the diseases that leave very lasting long-term effects, like meningitis? The rest I “get”….it is better to suffer the immediate consequences (illness) for a bigger payoff in the end (a stronger immune system and reduced risk of autoimmune problems.) But with meningitis, the immediate consequences can be so severe that there is no long term benefit, health-wise.

    • Heather says:

I can’t say what is right for any other family, but for me it doesn’t ever make sense to knowingly lower TH1 response unless I’ve done lab work to determine it is overactive. All vaccines target strains of a disease, which many believe offers no protection of the strain encountered is different or mutated. Based on several articles I’ve read they also tend to encourage mutation, which may exacerbate the problem. Furthermore, I highly doubt the effectiveness of vaccines even against the strains they are designed for. As I wrote about in this post, antibodies do not necessarily convey immunity.

My strategy with my own family is to protect and nurture TH1 function by declining vaccines and not over-sanitizing things so that my children have normal exposure to a host of microbes.

  8. Leah G says:

I am so grumpy right now…ugh… We dont vaccinate. Never have. I try to get my family to feed themselves better in hopes they will be healthier. No luck yet. In the meantime I increased our FCLO, ferments, and elderberry and despite a very clean diet we finally succumbed to their bugs after repeatedly hanging out with them sick. My 3 yo has been sick for 3 wks with either a runny nose or cough. the 15 month old has had bouts of runny nose….and now Mommy and Daddy finally got it for Christmas. I wish the sick people would at least stay home…ok I think I’m through venting.

    • Jane says:

Many people do not have that luxury. I work at a restaurant in a warm, wet climate with constant incoming viruses from travelers from all over the place. Health codes in my state are lax and few employees regularly wash their hands or follow safe food handling practices. There is not even a training for this for most of the employees. Not only is there no paid sick leave, there is often no coverage for any shift an employee might not be able to work. If you don’t get your shift covered and you don’t come to work, you lose your job. We currently have the flu going around the restaurant. It seems like everyone’s got it. People are running into the bathroom (shared with customers) or running into the kitchen to throw up. Cooks, servers and bussers, etc aren’t being inconsiderate by coming to work sick. They simply have no choice. I worry everyday not only about my own health (I have an auto-immune disorder) but know that someday an unvaccinated or immune compromised child, or one of our elderly, regular customers is going to get the flu and then find themselves in the hospital with terminal pneumonia. We really need more comprehensive approaches/policies/cultural shift in this country that will make it possible for sick people to stay home.

  9. Karen says:

Can you recommend a book or a resource to learn more about vaccinations? Thank you! This is so informative.

  10. Tim says:

How about you actually read the papers you site and not missrepresent them.

  11. mark says:

The seasonal flu shot has been given safely to millions of pregnant women over many years. Flu shots have not been shown to cause harm to pregnant women or their babies.

  12. Judy says:

Neither for or against the flu vaccine … Just a point to remember that not all flu shots carry mercury anymore. Single dose ones are w/o mercury, as well as the nasal sprays.

  13. vio says:

This is so helpful Mommypotamous (love that!) – thank you. Can I ask whether your kids have had any of the “normal” vaccinations that babies/young children (are practically forced to) have? I don’t want mine to have any kind of vaccinations – and they won’t – but I would like to do other things to support their general health and immune systems to ensure that if/when they catch the typical childhood diseases, they get through them as easily as possible and are detoxified and strengthened from the experience. Do you have any ideas/tips/posts on this? Thanks so much!

    • Kris says:

Please read complete studies on “typical childhood diseases”. Measles is incredibly dangerous and can kill children (not a few of the kids who get measles… a lot more than would make most parents comfortable). While I find anecdotes quite annoying in the face of science, I admit to a special dislike for the “typical” argument, since my stepdad lost 80% of his hearing when he contracted rubella at five (there was no vaccination for that at the time). However, that is not statistically relevant. Please read studies … peer-reviewed studies… before you decide not to vaccinate your children against serious diseases.

  14. Alyssa says:

This is the first year that I did not get the flu shot for several reasons. My mom is a nurse and I had asthma growing up so since I was in the “high risk” population she has me get the flu shot every year come flu season. The last 2 years I have had to get the vaccine because I was doing clinical rotations for school and it was required. Well this year I’m done with school and out of my parents house so no flu shot for me. Honestly, this is the healthiest I have ever been in the winter months. About a year ago I started trying to eat a more traditional foods diet, recently started taking a probiotic which was recommended to me by my homeopathic physician, and stopped eating dairy. My husband even ended up getting mono and I have had no problems at all. After all of that I’m convinced that the flu shot did not help me whatsoever, not to mention that the first year H1N1 was big I ended up with both H1N1 and the normal flu!

  15. Jim says:

A million thanks Heather, I hope you open peoples eyes to the fraud of the vaccine business.

  16. Amber says:

Please just remember that vaccines are created for population health. The purpose of a vaccine is not to protect an individual; it is to prevent epidemics. And trust me, the more and more people refuse vaccines the more epidemics we will begin to see. I’ve already seen in it my hospital with a resurgence in chicken-pox from elderly people with shingles. Because younger people that may have not been exposed and have not gotten a vaccine, they are getting chicken pox and then putting older people at risk for a shingles outbreak. Please continue to consider the long-term consequences of declining vaccinations.

    • Frank says:

Heather does not care about the rest of the population, she only cares about herself and her children, just like most of the posters here. If you were to look yourself honestly, you would likely be the same. Are you willing to put your childs health at risk, for the greater benefit of society? As a parent, I would say that almost nobody would. Thats why true vaccine information is hidden from people, and the vaccines are shoved down our throats. They do reduce epidemics, but they do not actually immunize your child, they just give them a taste so they have better odds of survival, and lower odds of spreading. If everybody rejects vaccines, we will go back to life in the early 1900s, where people had 10 kids because 7 of them would die before high school.

  17. Emma says:

Ironically the chicken pox vaccine is the only one I’m really against. We didn’t have it when I was a kid and it doesn’t protect against contracting the virus as much as having had the actual virus does. I think I would get it for my child if he/she reached their teen years and still hadn’t contracted it and had no antibodies. Sadly chicken pox doesn’t work as an example of people getting ill because of the decline in vaccine usage since the vaccine has only been available in the US since 1995. Additionally Shingles isn’t caused by older people catching chicken pox, it stays dormant in your body after the first infection and can resurface when you are older as Shingles.

I’d like to add, in defense of vaccines, no they do not always work, they are not always for the correct strain and your body does not always produce enough of an immune response to protect you from catching the virus, but I can confidently say as someone who has had chicken pox twice, the disease does not always produce enough of an immune response to protect you from getting it either. Amber is correct in that vaccines are all about herd immunity, about impeding the spread of a virus by having enough people in a population immune to a disease that its spread is slowed, that it can die out. Vaccines for diseases like Polio have been very effective at eradicating illnesses to the point where you have the luxury of not getting the vaccine and yet running little risk of contracting the illness.

  18. Alisha says:

I love how thorough this is! Thank you! I just used some of this info. to write in to the Diane Rehm show on NPR b/c they are discussing vaccinations right now! :)

  19. Dave says:

This is all incredibly misleading, beginning with the fake picture. Babies never get shots that size. This is so over-the-top propaganda. Don’t you realize the difference between temporal relationships and causal relationships?? Just because someone gets sick after getting a vaccine doesn’t mean the vaccine caused the illness! They are most likely unrelated. Instead of quoting, maybe you should look up actual studies… which is why schools require immunizations. “Healthy people need to get sick once in a while.” REALLY? Tell that to the parents whose children died of whooping cough.

    • Heather says:

Dave, the photo is a stock image. There are not many available that depict anything other than grinning babies with a needle. In my opinion that is a more misleading image. Also, I cited several studies within this article along with an analysis of the very well-respected Cochrane review.

Regarding whooping cough, “a recent study at UCLA indicated that approximately 1,000 babies die as a direct result of DTaP vaccination each year in the U.S. – far more than the 18 deaths last year from pertussis itself.” Source:

      • Dave says:

Again, the numbers from the “UCLA study” has no citation in the article you sent me. I googled for the UCLA study and found nothing. Except this:

And by the way, this is a .edu website from UCLA. Not another blog.

        • Danchi says:

A little late to this article but I hope to provide some accurate data. from the : Center of Disease Control National Vital Statics Report: This is where you go for accurate numbers, not the media or pro or anti vax sites. Everyone who is born in the US, dies in the US, illness, accidents etc. all here.

Deaths from Meseals since 1998: 5
Deaths from Pertussis since 1998: 60
          Flu Deaths:
          Influenza Deaths:
          2011: only 18 confirmed deaths.
2010: 500 or 494 but only 16 confirmed as Flu
2009: 48 total but 28 unconfirmed as Flu
          2008: 16 ? on number confirmed
          2007: 411 ? on number confirmed
          2006: 849 ? on number confirmed
2001: 257 but only 18 confirmed as Flu
          2002: 753 or 727 ? confirmed
          2000: 1,765 out of 300 million
The CDC has been combining pneumonia, viruses and at one point accidents victims who had colds as Flu deaths but they got busted in 2010 when a Canadian researcher did the math and research. So many of the number of actual confirmed deaths are questionable. They’ve said they will try and correct. I’m not holding my breath because not to many people research this data bank because of it’s size and people like making up their own stories.

Keep in mind the CDC has found 1,075 different and unique influenza viruses, collected by U.S. laboratories since October 1, 2004:
          11 influenza A (H1N1) viruses,
          709 influenza A(H3N2) viruses, and
          355 influenza B viruses.
They pick 3-4 every year to put in a vaccine. This year they added H1N1, this strain cause deaths and chronic illnesses/

Keep in mind these deaths are out of a population of 300 million. CDC doesn’t like to give out the exact “confirmed” number because it doesn’t support their 36,000 a year die from the flu mantra they have been chanting since 2000.

Thanks for a well written comprehensive post on flu shots. I hope you don’t mind that I put this link in my post on the flu shot. I hope more people will start to pay attention to what they are getting into!

  22. Alex says:

Sorry but nobody, EVER should get the flu vaccine. Avoid like the plague! Only one country tested them and discovered them to be full of live viruses as well as numerable toxins. Enjoy playing russian roulette with your life then get a vaccine. These is a an agenda at work here, and it’s not in our favour unfortunately. I discovered all this after researching after my friend lost her baby at 8 months :(

  23. Erin says:

I have never received the flu vaccination and neither have my two daughters. My husband is required to get it because he is military. This year my step son (6 years old) brought the flu home from school. Between him, my two young daughters (age 4 and 2) and myself – none who were vaccinated, my husband had the worst case of thr flu. I will never vaccinate against flu. My maternal grandmother never has a flu shot and she is relatively healthy. My maternal grandfather got a flu shot every year and had Alzheimer’s, several strokes, heart attacks and died earlier this year after he fell and couldn’t recover. Thank you for posting this!

  24. Peter says:

Whether to immunise comes down to game theory. If everyone else is immunising their children you can “cheat” as per game theory and not immunise your child hacing the benefit of hers immunity. If more than a small percentage are not immunising their children then to “cheat” would expose your child to a very big danger. If I wanted to “cheat” I would not encourage everyone else to also cheat.

  25. […] -Doing some intense research on the flu shot/natural flu remedies (like this “no flu” tea) and confirming my decision to not get a flu shot. […]

  26. Emily says:

I respect people’s decision not to vaccinate. But those of you who say they don’t work are not entirely correct. For example, rotavirus used to run rampant in daycares. It doesn’t anymore because of the vaccine. I don’t know about any of you but I would rather not subject my toddler to a month long violent bout of vomiting and diarrhea. Ad it it no coincidence that the incidence of whooping cough is on the rise, as more ad more people do not vaccinate. There is literally almost nothing a doctor can do for a child with whooping cough and it is a wretched illness. Or how about meningitis? I would rather vaccinate my baby than have her permanently brain damaged due to a totally preventable disease. I do not believe in all vaccine, like the flu or checked pox, but these life threatening diseases are another story. France has one of the lowest rates of vaccination and a huge resurgence of measles infections at the present time. That dies mean something.

    • Shannon says:

Here’s a crazy idea; keep your kid at home instead of housed at a “day care”. Perhaps kids spend a month vomiting because they are in an environment that is unhealthy for them. Jacking them up on vaccines is *NOT* the correct answer.

    • Christy says:

The mothers should have breastfed; breastfed babies are less likely to get rotavirus. Whooping cough is on the rise in the VACCINATED population.

    • Abbey says:

      Timely post..
There’s an epidemic in my city right now that has people dropping like flies and has claimed 8 lives so far. (Swine flu) it’s scary and people are seriously flocking to get their vaccines. Last week one woman did have a reaction to the vaccine which hasn’t been broadcasted further… She can no longer walk or move on her own.
The local news was “great” at pointing out that 4 of the 8 who died where not vaccinated and they “were unsure” at to whether or not the other four were…

Right now I’m just focusing on prevention for my family. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t scared. However,
Doctors aren’t Gods… Remember when we found out what aspirin did to children? How about the fact that x-rays used to be used during pregnancies before ultra sounds and now are considered dangerous to a fetus?
So… I don’t exactly have faith in vaccines for saving lives and think people should put primary focus on health and prevention.

      • Rhonda says:

I’ve no doubt the media is calling the number of people who have contracted the Flu an “epidemic” but you must keep in mind the words that are used are designed to invoke fear. Fear mongering is off the chart again as the CDC and Vaccine company manipulate people into getting this shot. I’d be interested to know what the actual number is. Here is a annotation from the British Medical Journal from 1959.

        Measles Epidemic
        Measles epidemic [page 354]
        Br Med J 1959;1:351.2 (Published 07 February 1959)
-In the first three weeks of this year about 41,000 cases of measles were recorded in England and Wales. This is well above the corresponding figures of the last two years – namely, about 9,000 in 1958 and 28,000 in 1957 – though it is below the highest levels reached in the last nine years. To give some idea of the main features of the disease as it appears today and of how it is best treated, we invited some general practitioners to write short reports on the cases they have seen in their practices recently.

These appear at p.380 (extracts from this page follow this article). It is interesting to note, first, that the distribution of the disease is rather patchy at present. It has not yet reached the areas where two of these doctors practise (in South Scotland and Cornwall), and other areas are known to be free of the disease so far. On the other hand, in Kent it is reported to have arrived in time to put the children to bed over Christmas. These writers agree that measles is nowadays normally a mild infection, and they rarely have occasion to give prophylactic gamma globulin. As to the treatment of the disease and its complications, the emphasis naturally varies from one practice to another. Amount of bed-rest, when to administer a sulphonamide or antibiotic, the use of analgesics and linctuses – all these may still be debatable problems in the treatment of what is said to be the commonest disease in the world. But there is probably much in the opinion which one of the writers expresses: “It is the frequent visiting by the interested clinician and not the therapy which produces the good results.”

“41,000 cases of measles”, which by the way several on this thread have labeled a dangerous disease, and no where in this annotation has the Dr. stated this was an epidemic. The Vaccine Industry orders the media to use words inappropriately and because of it many words have lost their meaning. This is just to give you some perspective.

This years Flu shot has 4 strains. As I posted earlier there are over 1000 unique Influenza viruses and the Industry picks 4. H1N1 is the most dangerous.
“Swine flu is not very different from normal flu. “On the contrary if you look at the number of cases it is nothing compared to a normal flu outbreak,”
Dr .Wolfgang Wodarg, Lung specialist, chairman of the health committee in the German parliament and European Council. Most of the Seed Vaccines are made in Europe.

WHO scandal exposed: Advisors received kickbacks from H1N1 vaccine manufacturers:

WHO list reveals flu advisors with financial ties to pharma, vaccine manufacturers:

The pandemic that never was: Drug firms ‘encouraged world health body to exaggerate swine flu threat':

The whole swine flu scare was based on the death of only one soldier at Fort Dix, New Jersey (One report said October, 1975 and another said February, 1976). There was never any real evidence that he even had swine flu. There was a wide divergence of opinion among the doctors as to the real cause of his death. Some even tried to blame it on a walk he took when he was ill. An official diagnosis pronounced his death to be from A-Victoria flu, and not swine flu. All the soldiers at the camp had been inoculated with Port Chalmers flu vaccine, which was claimed to contain antigens to protect against all strains of flu. Shortly after the shots over 500 men got sick with the flu anyway, thus proving that the flu vaccine is a total failure and does not protect from the flu or anything else. 66 more were hospitalized at Fort Knox about the same time. We do not have the report from all the army camps but, it is quite certain there were a large number of cases of serious vaccine poisoning—no doubt, called by some other name, and death certificates falsified as is usually the case with vaccination deaths. The death certificates of vaccine poisoning usually read, “died of pneumonia” or hepatitis, or meningitis or something else.

NO FLU VACCINE has been tested. Vaccines contain decomposed protein such as that which is taken from pustules on sick animals or putrefied eggs mixed with deadly drugs such as carbolic acid (phenol), mercury, formaldehyde (formalin), etc. Decomposed proteins can cause botulism, salmonella or other types of body poisoning. It’s no wonder people drop dead after the shots.

Read the many links at: Swine Flu is a HOAX!

If you read the package insert of the vials it states: The Flu Vaccine will not PREVENT you from catching the Flu. It will alleviate the severity of it if you catch it. The vaccine industry says you need a Flu shot but do they ever tell you it will prevent you from catching the Flu. Especially when they know the vaccine itself can give you the FLU. It’s time to wake up people.

  27. I’d like to see the research.

    • Cassie says:

I have to agree. I would like to see a link to actual research. If this is true then we should all have access to the info that could easily defend these claims.

  28. SVITLANA says:

Good information Heather! I stopped vaccinating my daughter when she was 4 months after educating myself!

  29. Lee Sledd says:

I take issue with this article in that it lumps all vaccines together and attempts to say that they don’t work. Vaccines don’t work? How many people do you know with polio? Odds are, zero; because we eliminated it with vaccines. This blanket doubting of science is truly dangerous because not all illness or vaccines are alike. Not vaccinating against seasonal flu is one thing. Not vaccinating against pertussis or measles is quite another.

What any intelligent parent needs to do is some math; namely, how many deaths occur from the vaccine vs. the illness? Pertussis is fatal in an estimated 1.6% of hospitalized infants who are under one year of age. Where are there any confirmed deaths attributable to DTaP?
    sources: CDC, WHO, wikipedia &

Now, if you live on an isolated farm or commune where nobody ever travels, you may never be exposed to these contagions- that is an unknown variable in the equation. And your genetics and diet and state of health when exposed may, sometimes, to some extent, protect you. MAY. (I doubt anyone taking any of these vitamin D & elderberry regimens is rushing out to have unprotected sex with the HIV positive, right?) So, to keep your math simple, assume exposure, and assume you are not always in peak health. Recall always that people, especially infants too young to get vaccines or the immuno-compromised, die from many of these diseases, and in far greater numbers than suffer any adverse effects from vaccines.

So go ahead, don’t get any vaccines. You can roll those dice. Sadly, you risk killing your neighbors as well as your own family. Because, back in the ‘good old days’ before vaccines, thousands of people died, as naturally as they lived, from preventable disease. Look: there is no conspiracy to sell vaccines. The real money in drugs is in erectile dysfunction, hair loss, weight loss, and chronic conditions like diabetes. Flu vaccine production is laborious- the eggs- and has to be subsidized to tickle companies into bothering. We all want to live ‘natural’ in this chemical swamp of modernity, but we also enjoy the longest life expectancy in history due to modern science. Don’t be swayed by scary stories; always seek data. This site has done a good job of cherry picking that data to support a fear-based view derived from powerful personal experience- but mom is not an epidemiologist, and has not proven that her unspecified health issues were caused by vaccines. I will stick with the experts who devote their lives to studying the immune system over some website, however persuasive or riddled with links. Doctors and science are not infallible, but more often than not they are the best thing we have going. They saved my son’s life (meconium aspiration)- and saving lives is the same motive behind public health campaigns to vaccinate. Educate yourself and the decisions you make will be with the greatest confidence.

    • JJ says:

How is it that my fully vaccinated, 22 yr old nephew’s titers showed he had no immunity to the diseases he was vaccinated against as a child? Herd immunity from vaccines is a myth; unless you’re going to require nearly all adults to receive boosters, as needed.

    • Bobbi says:

      Very well said Lee!

    • Carolyn says:

I agree with JJ. Lee when was the last time you had any boosters of the vaccines you received as a child? Parents seem to forget that they are the vectors of the diseases they pretend to be protecting their children against with immunizations.

  30. […] Flu Shots May Double Your Chance Of Getting Sick […]

  31. Kate says:

Heather, goodness, what a firestorm of comments. Whoa. But I must say, I really appreciate this article; thank you for a different (from what I usually hear) perspective.

  32. Great information! I was just reading this article here on how newer vaccines are being formulated with sugar as the base, namely flu vaccines. We are injecting children and other susceptible people with chemicals, viruses and sugar!

  33. Not a fan of posts that title to create fear in people. That are hundreds of studies that suggest that flu vaccines in the general population is more than safe. It saves lives.

As for the “study” on miscarriages there are other sides to that too and some more reading may make you question the integrity of that data.

We don’t need more epidemics (thank you Jenny McCarthy) because people are being scared by misrepresented facts.

  34. Brandi says:

I am adamantly against flu shot even though my DD came down with all 3 strains last year, and the rest of us with 2 strains. I am constantly being pushed on this issue, but I was recently asked if the nasal spray was safe. I honestly don’t know enough about it, but do you have any research I could pass along as to why that is just as dangerous. I’m assuming its just as dangerous. My husband is forced by the military, and he always tries to blow his nose as hard as possible afterwards, and still feels effects of it. Thanks!

  35. Leah says:

I appreciate the link Heather provided in regards to the herd immunity issue. The original theory came about in 1933 from an epidemiological study on one community of non vaccinated children under age15. What was found, was that when 68 percent of the children in that group acquired natural immunity from measles, or inherited natural immunity, measles was eradicated from that community of kids. I also love how some health professionals like to say, “do your research”, when I say I am not going too vaccinate my child. I have done months and months of non-biased reading on vaccines looking at both sides of the issue. There are many doctors out there who do not support vaccines because they have also done their research. Most of them don’t like to talk about it out of fear of losing their medical license. What the health professionals who want everyone to vaccinate mean is, look only at information that supports vaccines. You have to be willing to look at all sides, even if you are afraid of, or don’t like what you may find.

  36. Syrita says:

Thank you for this article!! Very good and a wonderful reassurance. It has brought a question to mind. Unfortunately I have a bunch of old silver fillings, is there any way to detox the mercury that has built up in me over the years?? I know its off topic but I could USS some suggestions. Thanks so much!

  37. Amanda says:

I thoroughly appreciate your article. I just shared with my friends some information regarding vaccinations that is contrary to thier beliefs that they are good. They are Registered Nurses and I anticipated thier “text book” defense of vaccinations. I believe that many individuals that are in the healthcare profession will be inclined to defend the system, because it is part of thier livelihood. Subconsciously avoiding an honest dissection of thier belief system for thier survival. The truth is out there for those who seek it. Thank you so much for your integrity and sharing with us! My daughter had a bad reaction to the MMR vaccine and my son has Celiac Disease. Unfortunately, most people don’t seriously question and investigate vaccines until after they have been adversely affected by them, such as myself. Keep up the good work!

I am a healthcare worker, and our administration”forces”us to get flu shots. If we don’t we have to wear masks while on duty and if we catch the flu we are not compensated for our sick time.

  41. Ashley Bristow via FB says:

ugh this reminds me, my midwife facebook page posted a “study” saying that women who get flu shots while pregnant will have full term babies. I was angry that this was on my midwifes page! I hope there are no pregnant women getting any shots, let alone the flu shot!

    • Rhonda says:

Unfortunately the Flu shot is being pushed on pregnant women and they are not being told the risks. I know several young women that have miscarried within 48 hours of getting the shot yet their Drs tell them there is no connection.

  44. Staci Tofslie Sinkler via FB says:

Yes! Hopefully the fact that this comes from the Cochrane Review will help convince some skeptics!

  45. one problem that was highlighted to me by my doctor was that flu vaccines are good for 2 months… most docs start pushing current flu vacs in october… the height of flu season is february.. which means those vaccinated in october are not “covered” during the worst time when flu is most prevalent… which makes me think the whole flu vaccine thing is a conspiracy by pharma to make money… it’s all bullshit

  52. Lauralee that is BS. Healthcare workers need to unite. There is only a 2% chance that the shot might be the flu circulating this year. So then the Shot makers should reinburse the system you work for for the workers who get the flu even though they got the shots….right? Your sick pay should be used as you need it period.

  53. Kristen Green Byers via FB says:

Isn’t the h1n1 strain mixed in this years flu vaccine?

  54. Im a pediatric nurse and I wish you wouldn’t have posted this!!!! Its better to get sick w a cold then have the flu…which the vaccine does not cause at all!!!!! If these children get the flu…it can be fatal and which some cases it IS! If the flu shot was sooo bad the FDA wouldn’t appove it and it wouldn’t be mandatory for health care workers to recieve it. Be safe Mamas. ..get your babies AND yourself vaccinated!

  55. Erin Elliott via FB says:

Lol. I’m not trying to scare you silly lady. That’s exactly why I don’t get the flu shot.

  62. Ashley Bristow I completely agree with the mid-wife! You save you and your baby! You know how many moms contract diseases while pregnant then give it to their baby. Google pertussis vaccine…if you even carry the germ you can bring it home to your baby!!!!

  63. Kristen Green Byers via FB says:

Deana FYI….everything the FDA approves isn’t always safe. I get emails from them on a daily basis about recalls on drugs and other things that fail.

  64. Summer Ullmann via FB says:

I worry very much about vaccinating, but I just have a hard believing this. My daughter is going on 8 yrs old and has had the flu vaccine every year except one time and that year she got the flu badly

  65. And you can still carry the virus even if you ARE vaccinated Deana.

  66. Jennifer House via FB says:

I received flu shots while pregnant with 2 of my 4. All of my children have been given flu shots. Get the shot or don’t get the shot but scare tactic advertising is ridiculous. If you do the research on how the vax works, than you would understand you do not get the flu from the flu shot.

  67. Deana Bennett Cornwell the FDA has approved ALL KINDS of things that aren’t safe. Aspartame anyone? Vioxx? Seriously that is a,really poor argument to anyone who is actually reading about health.

  68. Sarah Frazier Martin via FB says:

Thanks for the tag Ilana Grostern! I will read this when we stop for the day.

  71. Lou Anne via FB says:

anyone who has faith in the FDA is still dreadfully naive – here’s just one teeny example :

  72. Susie Ann via FB says:

I went and got the flu shot this past Saturday at a local pharmacy. I woke up the following day with a sore arm, then starting getting achy everywhere, chills, runny nose, headache. Went to bed to take a nap and woke up 3 hours later with a fever and a horrible cough. Just missed 4 days of work. It’s the first flu shot I have had in 4 years. It’s also the first cold I have had in 3 years. I will re-think about ever getting a flu shot again. :-(

  73. Rashell Berrean via FB says:

Wow, Deana Bennett Cornwell! Please don’t base your decision on whether or not to get the flu shot based on the very corrupt, bought and paid for FDA. Do your own research. Then make your own decision <3

  74. Andrea Heesters via FB says:

My mother took a flu shot every year and got ill every year… She also got muscle rheumatism from it. Had the flu shot and couldn’t get up any more the day after… Then I gave her the homeopathic pills I got from my doctor and she never got the flu again… Same as my husband and myself..No more flu since then. And… in France they don’t longer give flu shots as they found out it doesn’t work.

  75. Gerard Talamo via FB says:

This is why I never got one am
Nd also never got the flu. Don’t drink the Koolaid folks.

  76. Kurtin Rod via FB says:

Fact is we need to get sick to continually strengthen our immunity to germs. Although each flu virus may be different from the next… I dont see the point in a flu shot at all. I will just eat lots of raw honey, cinnamon, lemon, coconut oil, fruits, veggies, and a little colloidal silver here n there.

  77. It still amazes me that people completely ignore the fact that the Cochrane Review found the vaccine ineffective. Whether or not you think it can cause the flu, make you sicker or whether or not you think it causes other injuries, the bottom line is that it has been shown to be ineffective. How does the “benefit” of an ineffective vaccine outweigh the risks?

  78. I have never gotten the flu or flu shot. But that means nothing. This study looked at thousands of people. This is why we do studies! To find the truth. Funny how so many in the medical field don’t want to look at the actual evidence but rely in anecdotes, and then disregard anecdotes that say the opposite.

  79. Kellie Muncy via FB says:

Every vaccination or drug that has ever been recalled for various reasons including injury and death have been approved by the FDA first. I don’t hold any stock in what they are selling.

  80. Mandi Hudgins via FB says:

Do not trust the FDA. They are concerned for their pockets not lives.

  81. Julie Hinterlang Savarino I thought you would like this!

  82. Bryn Portelli via FB says:

Of course the flu shot wouldn’t eliminate the risk of transmission- it’s a VIRUS. The vaccine just helps lessen the symptoms of the virus if you contract it- in a sense giving u a better chance of a quicker recovery….

  83. Susan Bivens via FB says:

Seriously this is a bit ridiculous, 50 ppl is not a valid study! We’ve had 7 or 8 deaths in Portland because of the fly and tons of people are getting sick who weren’t vaccinated! It’s a bad epidemic right now!

  84. Chelsey Miller via FB says:

Jordan, thought it was interesting she said people who get the most sick actually have the best immune systems!

  85. Thanks for posting. 3 adult deaths in MI this year and lots of people running for their shots. Not my family. Not once one actually researches vaccines and disregards the scare tactics.

  86. Sherry Wall via FB says:

I am still waiting on data that shows the relation to those that got sick or died from the flu and DID take the shot vs those that did not. IMO it is all big pharm propaganda. Everytime we took the shot we got sick. It is NOT natural to inject your bodies with foreign toxins. Our grandparents (who lived to 90’s) did not take and vaccines at all. Yet since the vaccine push started look at how the numbers for ADD, Autism, and other unheard of conditions have risen. I have to say you are very uneducated in regards to vaccines if you think the FDA and Big Pharm have our best interests at heart. If people would wash their hands and stay away from sickness and take regular vitamins or just eat healthy to boost their immune there would be a huge decrease in flu numbers. Fact is that your body actually protects you better if you do get sick from time to time.

  87. Jordan Baker via FB says:

Chelsey I’ve read that before in one of her articles….still doesn’t make sense to me though??!!

  88. 4 people have died at the hospital I work at from H1N1 in the past two weeks. All between 20-45 yrs old.

  89. Amber Hill via FB says:

We got the shots without any preservative (mercury). Most of the bad stuff seems to come from the mercury. I wish there was more information about non-mercury vaccines. I had to make the best decision at the the time. Perhaps next year I’ll do it differently.

  90. Hey, it’s called build up your immune system! I guarantee you all of these people that are sick and dying of the flu probably eat out all of the time. I know a lot of my friend’s and their kids are not on any kind of whole foods diet. What do you expect when your immune system is kaput? Get with the program people and stop relying on a money corrupt government to shove meds down your throat or a needle in your arm because you are sick!

  91. Everyone I know that gets the flu shot, gets the flu too. But they go right back the next for another round.

  92. Lacey Hamilton Rankin via FB says:

No shots here!! We will not let mainstream media and big pharm scare us into getting shots!! What we will work on is protecting our family through good hygiene, exercise, essential oils, supplements and vitamins and a good wholesome organic diet.. And lots of prayers!! :)

  95. Michelle Morehouse via FB says:

I get the flu shot yearly as does my entire family. I am so thankful that we have the option to.get vaccinated and lower the risk of getting life threatening illnesses :)

  96. People like Mommypotamus who post BS like this are very irresponsible. I hope she does not have children.

  97. I think that whether you believe in vaccines, or not, or the flu shot, or not – the piece that SO many ignore is PREVENTION. If you’re getting the flu, or even sick every year, you need to address why your immune system is weakened. We constantly treat our bodies poorly with chemicals in our food, cleaning & personal care items, & overuse of medications & antibiotics. Them we wonder why we get sick, & we run to modern medicine. Which can be important at times, but often times only perpetuates the assault on our immune system!!

  98. See this is why my family doesn’t get the flu shot! We all got it once and ended up with the flu shot a week later.

Thank you so much for sharing! I am 17 weeks pregnant with my first child and I have been back and forth about getting a flu shot. One doctor told me if I get the flu while pregnant I could die, while another told me she doesn’t think I should get one if I don’t feel comfortable with it and am generally healthy. I was considering getting one once I reached the 2nd trimester, but now in my 17th week I still don’t feel comfortable doing it. This article had some very convincing information!

  101. ReNee O. McDonald via FB says:

Although any death is sad, 4 people here and 50 people there don’t make an epidemic….and thankfully we still have people that dare to question the science, the gov’t and keep posting the research despite mainstream media.

This is not true. We have had many deaths from H1N1 in TN. Almost all were not vaccinated. This years vaccine covers H1N1. Please get the flu shot.

  104. Viviana Barrios via FB says:

We started getting the flu shot since I was pregnant. Very thankful that we have the option. We will always get vaccinated.

  105. Jon Luiten via FB says:

Look at me! I believe everything I read on the internet instead of from my doctor – a person who has more medical experience than some stranger with a website. Ugh.

  106. Elizabeth ProfessorSprout Russell via FB says:

I’ve had the flu shot 2x and gotten VERY ill both times. This was years ago. I now refuse to get them, and take a lot of flack from the Dr’s office about refusing them for my kids, as well. As an herbalist, I have a lot of tricks up my sleeves for avoiding illness – and big pharma.

  107. I am an RN. I work in Outpatient Surgery, but all of the surgery, cath lab, and interventional radiology patients start out with us. We also do pediatric surgeries. Would you want me taking care of you and I’m in the early phase of the flu? That’s why professionals at hospitals make it mandatory for all employees to be vaccinated. Its your choice, I’m not a Pro Flu Shot Warrior, just please stop hating on people who decide to take the shot, and the experts who recommend taking the injection. We only hear the horror stories. Nobody cares about the people who take the shot with no problems. So, with that point, I’ll say I got the mandatory flu shot and had zero side effects.

  108. To be clear, the Cochrane Review abstract *does* say: “Influenza vaccines have a modest effect in reducing influenza symptoms and working days lost. There is no evidence that they affect complications, such as pneumonia, or transmission.”

It’s a bit misleading to highlight the transmission part and the funding bias part, as though the study was uniformly negative, especially on the key question: “Does the flu vaccine work to reduce flu symptoms and keep you actively in your life?” To that, the answer the Cochrane Review study gives is, “Modestly yes.”

  109. Caitlin Winters via FB says:

Mandy Sweeney a little boy who was vaccinated for the flu just died from it. I’m not sure it’s cels either way what helps. It definitely seems to weaken the immune response in some people to get the flu shot.

  110. Andrea Ridder via FB says:

Last year was the only year I DID NOT get a flu shot. I got the flu, and it was the sickest I have ever been. I will never miss another flu shot and neither will anyone in my family.

  111. Alia says:

    Another Canadian study to read,
‘”We did find that the ferret findings were consistent with our earlier human studies,” Skowronski said, noting that the scientifically stringent experiment used ferrets, considered to be excellent models of human influenza infection. Although the ferrets first vaccinated and then exposed to H1N1 experienced acute illness that was more severe than the animals not vaccinated, all the ferrets survived the 14-day test. They were later sacrificed.’

  112. Caitlin Winters via FB says:

Clear either way. He was 5 and lived in Eugene Oregon.

  113. Most people dying of flu right now have not had the shot. My family gets it every year and doesn’t get sick. We also eat a healthy diet and live an active lifestyle. My step daughter didnt get it last year her mom is against it. She spent 2weeks very sick once in November and again in February. This year she has it and has not been sick once.

  114. Jordan Dempsey via FB says:

Natural immunity is best! The flu shot does not guarantee you will not get the flu!

  115. Rachel Scheller McElroy via FB says:

I try to tell people this, but nobody believes me and I just get a lot of flak for it… sigh.

  116. Flu shots are not just for the health of the individual, let’s not forget that by preventing yourself from getting the flu, you will not spread it to your children and their classmates, or to your husband and his co-workers or even to your elderly parents and their circle of friends. I look at it as kind of my responsibility as a citizen to stay healthy!

  117. Maria Fraccica via FB says:

For all you nay sayers take the time to read the insert of any flu vaccine and it clearly states that it does not work.

  118. Erikka Gray via FB says:

I weigh the risks when deciding to get vaccinated. That said, I believe the research shows we’re better off getting the shots than not. So my family of 5 is vaccinated.

  119. Jennifer Whiteford via FB says:

Flu shots are based on the top strains that the government believes people are most likely to get. It’s not going to stop you from getting one of the hundreds of other strains out there. The chances are greatly reduced of you getting sick because it knocks out the most prevalent ones. Doesn’t mean you won’t still get sick from something else or that it’s 100% effective because your body may not receive it perfectly, and you may get sick and die as a result of it because your body had some unknown thing wrong with it. As a nurse I will always get it for myself and my family because I see the devastation from not.

  120. Amanda Rose via FB says:

    Kristie, kind of relevant

  121. Kristie Benoit via FB says:

    Awesome Amanda

  122. Maegan Crandall via FB says:

I hate these posts. I try and make the right decision as a mom and yet either way you get someone saying you didn’t make the right choice. Obviously I love my child and don’t want to hurt them, but I also don’t want her to get the flu. It’s just frustrating, you can’t be perfect and these posts just lay on the guilt.

  123. Kat Simons via FB says:

Articles and other bloggers are not credible sources, IMO. Linking to the actual studies, not ‘Natural News’ and Healthy Home Economist. Look at the actual studies.

    • Rhonda says:

There are no INDEPENDENT studies, they are all industry based. That’s the problem. The Vaccine industry and CDC will not allow INDEPENDENT studies because they don’t want you to know the shots don’t work. If any shot worked you would never need to have boosters.

  124. dont believe this stuff, immunizations are important

  125. If you reduce the number of flu deaths by taking the shot, as been proven over many times, get the shot!!

    • Rhonda says:

Last year there were 18 confirmed Influenza DEATHS. That’s confirmed by lab test. The number of GBS was twice as high.

  126. The flu shot lets your body recognize strains of the flu quicker and then crushes them …the shot doesn’t kill the flu , your immune system does..if you choose to get the shot the likelihood of death from the virus goes down..

    • Rhonda says:

That’s not how the immune system works. The CDC and vaccine industry has been pushing that myth for decades.

“We have known for decades that getting the childhood diseases naturally results in a permanent immunity to the specific microorganism. Getting the vaccines results in a temporary immunity, meaning that susceptibility is deferred and repeated booster shots will be required for the ENTIRE life of the individual. In the 80s, the specific immune mechanisms involved in vaccine-induced immunity was discerned. In the 90s, the same mechanisms in humans were explored. T cells (thymus cells) are the major cell in the immune system; they direct and control all immune responses as well as immune memory. Subsets of T cells are the T-helper cells (Th). T-helper cells coordinate and direct the safest and most effective immune response. Using Moskowitz’s measles example, we know that, when infected with the measles virus naturally via the nasopharyngeal route, the body produces a Th1 response that externalizes the infection and provides permanent immunity.1 Fever, rash, coughing, sneezing, etc are signs of the body ridding itself of this infection. Bypassing the normal body lines of defense by injecting a vaccine forces the immune system into an emergency-based Th2 response which serves to internalize the infection. You don’t get the disease but are susceptible to the disease later since the Th2 response results in poor immune memory. So, if a natural, viral (measles) infection results in a Th1 response, why don’t we make vaccines that could elicit the same response. (To put this simply, Th2 cell response is not a percursor to initianting immunity. Th2 cell response induces an INFLAMMATORY response, locally and internally. TH1 cytokines intiates a immune response because it is stimulates via the “normal immune route” of the nose, throat, mouth, ears eyes etc.)

In 1995, Golding and Scott,2 published the need for strategies to make vaccines that would generate the “required” Th cell to the corresponding microorganism. Since that time, attempts to produce vaccines that would generate a “natural”- type response have failed. So, we are left with vaccines that generate “protective” responses as a second choice. How does this work? In vaccine-induced Th2 responses, called humoral responses, the body produces large quantities of specific antibodies that block the virus from entering cells. This response is why a vaccinated child doesn’t get a full blown infection and why the child won’t spread as many viruses into the environment. However, antibodies cannot get into cells to eliminate viruses once the viruses are in the cells or cannot kill infected cells themselves. Therefore, the body has no choice other than to internalize the virus and be chronically infected when the body is forced into a Th2 antibody response. The body is essentially constipated with viruses that it cannot expel!

How Do Vaccines WorkUnvaccinated children who are exposed to measles will generate the immune response that is required to make permanent immunity as well as kick out the virus from the body. The normal, healthy body’s response to viruses is to externalize them. To suppress this natural response can be as hazardous to our health as suppressing waste elimination from the bowel or toxin release from the skin. Natural Th1 responses generate cell-mediated responses that serve to both neutralize viruses by producing antibodies and most importantly stimulate the immune cells necessary to kill any cells infected with viruses. The body works to externalize and eliminate viruses when the Th1 response is generated. So we understand now that when a Th2 response is induced, “it drives the infection deeper into the interior and causes us to harbor it chronically.”3 It is commonly held that the presence of antibody to viruses is a sign of a chronic on-going infection not a sign of immunity.4 Our bodies generally need to have Th1 cells to defend against viral, Gram-negative bacterial, and fungal infections, and tuberculosis, as well as to protect against cancer. Th2 response is necessary to protect against Gram-positive bacterial, parasitic infections, as well as to neutralize toxins from microorganisms and the environment. A balance of Th1/Th2 cells in the body is defined as immunostasis (or immune balance) and is required for optimum health and wellness. Vaccines promote a failure in immunostasis by making the Th2-type cells dominant. How Do Vaccines Work? Immune Mechanisms and Consequences

  127. Thank you for writing this article!! Beautifully done, quite possibly one of my favorites!

  128. Nicole Lauandos-Meier via FB says:

my asthmatic sister had the flu shot and ended up getting H1N1. hmm. not us – not jumping on the big. Pharma bandwagon… we need to eat clean, exercise and expose ourselves to germs once in a while!

  129. Melanie Johnston Boyle via FB says:

It saddens me to read all of these comments. Why are you following this page? The flu shot had a 50% success rate and weakens your immune system. Not worth it for me. So many of you believe you are getting the shot and will not get sick. Guess what? Family of six, times 16 years, times no flu shot, equals two very short 4 day duration of the flu. In sixteen years. I’ll take that. And we never get sick. When we rarely do its brief. Less than a day. I’m happy with my choice. And guess what else? Those with the weaker immune systems are the ones spreading the flu. Not the ones who don’t get the shot. If you don’t agree with me, I don’t care. It’s my family and my decision.

  130. YES! Someone finally said it! Thanks so much Heather for all your research and not being afraid to rock the boat a little! :)

  131. Anne O'Neal via FB says:

Lisa Tarrant: for your nurse friend who’ll say you have the flu because you didn’t get vaccinated. Stay strong, Lady! Stay strong!

  132. Melissa Matson via FB says:

You can also choose to use other methods to combat the flu. We use essential oils (therapeutic grade like doTERRA and Native American Nutritionals) and herbs. We usually do get sick with something during flu season, but I can tell you it’s much more mild than what others have reported to us in our community who do nothing to prevent. We immunize our 7 children on a delayed schedule and use alternative/natural medicines and therapies, in addition to Western medicine, when appropriate. And, eating a clean/organic diet as much as possible is paramount to overall wellness. Do your own research from creditable sources and feel good about the choices YOUR making for YOUR family. No guilt needed!!!

  133. Steevo Jolly via FB says:

You know what they call alternative or natural medicines that work? Real medicine. Nonsense. All of it. Vaccines save lives.

  134. Sergio De Varona via FB says:

  135. I would NEVER go without a flu shot!!!

  136. Anlie Smith via FB says:

My healthy 18 year old had H1N1 (confirmed by tests) 3 years ago. Yes, she was incredibly sick, yes, we were scared beyond words. I don’t believe in flu shots or tamiflu for that matter, but I moved her to my room in my bed and monitored her around the clock. I made sure she was comfortable (as much as humanly possible). I didn’t break her fever on purpose but watched very closely so she won’t dehydrate. She was sick for nearly 10 days, and I STILL won’t get the shot. Oh…although I was in VERY close contact with her the entire time, not one of us (mom, dad or brother) got sick. We just made sure we wash hands and eat healthy like there is was no tomorrow.

  137. Don’t get me wrong, I am a health nut. A pro vaccination one. Talking in the medical field the flu shot really protects you from the respiratory strain of the flu. You can still get a confirmed case, yes. But much milder and usually no pneumonia. We do get the flu shot in our house. But those who don’t I have heard good things about thieves oil? Haven’t read too much on it but might. I don’t judge and love this site for many of the organic and all natural tips. We parents and caregivers by no means want to hurt out children so we are just doing our best. No one should judge.people have strong opinions. I believe vaccines safe lives. But have many friends who don’t and love to hear their natural ways to help combat illness.

  138. Kim McFadden via FB says:

Problem is I am definitely for getting all shots. I had never had strep throat until after I gave birth to my daughter. My immune system is strong and so is hers. I believe in getting vaccinated because these people who are now coming over from third world countries are bringing their illnesses that we ain’t use to and infecting our kids. People from third world countries some say it’s against their religion to vaccinate their kids. They are the reason our kids are getting sick because the viruses we have shots for are mutating and we are getting sick again. If everyone would vaccinate their children we would be in a cleaner environment.

  139. Kelley Elizabeth via FB says:

I got sick after I got the flu shot when I was pregnant the OBGYN said the formula was slightly different for pregnant women… This was in 2010, after that I got the flu had a fever of 104 and it was I have to say the worst ever in my life. Idk if the flu shot was to blame but I haven’t had the shot since then and I haven’t had the flu either. Honestly I’ve been scared because it was such a horrible experience. Not to mention I kept getting sick throughout my entire pregnancy. I had pharyngitis after the flu.. That I never even heard of before. That was my first experience with the flu shot and my last def. because of my own personal experience and never getting that sick before having the shot.

  140. Sergio De Varona just my luck! Science!!!!

  141. This post is untrue and it saddens me that people are stupid enough to follow it. I wish that Darwinism was still allowed to be practiced and warning labels were removed so people would faze themselves out.

  142. Kim McFadden, I respect your opinion and feel we should all respects everyone’s opinion. It is not our decision to force vaccinations on anyone. My son is 3.5 years old and has never had the flu shot (or the flu), my husband and I do not get the flu shot either (nor have we got the flu). We build our immune systems and make them heal us. We can heal ourselves, and, respectfully, you can choose vaccines to protect your family. It is each of our rights. Saying everyone should be forced is disrespectful. I would like to also point out that no one in my sons school has contracted the flu from him not being vaccinated. Greens are good for us all!

  143. Why post studies that aren’t backed by anything or anyone legitimate ??? Just to get people all riled up. Vaccinations should never be a Facebook discussion.

    • Rhonda says:

Who do you consider legitimate. The article was very well researched and if you did the same you would know this. If you are waiting for Dr. Nancy Snyderman, Guptha, Johnson or any of the other highly paid medical talking heads to tell you anything that this article has provided, don’t hold you breath because you will surely die. How about this for a reference:
You will never look at vaccinated children the same!- Shedding Viruses

“There is no evidence that any influenza vaccine thus far developed is effective in preventing or mitigating any attack of influenza. 145. Maegan Crandall – I’m sorry that you experience this post that way. I definitely didn’t write it for that purpose. My goal is simply to share information that I am glad was shared with me so that other parents can consider it and decide what is best for their family.

  146. Alexis Martinez…it’s a way for people to open up their eyes and not be so trusting of everything that big Pham says. I would never say to or not to… It’s up to each person to decide what they want to put into their body. I am very great-full to people who inspire me to do my own research. I’m sure this has been posted to raise awareness to that fact that the flu shot is not 100% effective….

  147. Aly June via FB says:

I haven’t had a flu shot since I was a pre teen and I haven’t had the flu since. I got a kind of flu (don’t know which strain) every year when I was younger and had the shot at my mothers behest. Interesting. Thank you for sharing this.

  148. Maegan Crandall via FB says:

Oh – yes, I understand you didn’t mean to make me feel guilty. It’s just that I see these all the time since I’m a member of a lot of natural parenting pages and it’s just a stressful thing to see. It’s hard being a parent – you want to do what is best for your child and yet it seems there is so much negativity sometimes coming at me, and I don’t like living in a space of fear. And I really am on the fence about vaccines. I chose a delayed schedule but who knows? I don’t want her to get sick, yet I don’t know if I am doing something wrong either. Just sucks.

  149. Robert Fischer – Thanks for your comment. I didn’t feel the need to reiterate that since I covered it earlier in the post, but perhaps I should have.

  150. Laura Hoglin via FB says:

12 years with an annual shot, I never get the flu. I was sick of getting the flu every year, especially since I get 104* temps and MISERY, and eventually it took longer to recover than the down time from the actual disease.

  151. Renea Kempf via FB says:

With so much propaganda of vaccines especially the flu vaccine being rammed down your throat every time you turn on the tv or pass a Walgreens, I think it is refreshing to see some actual study’s going on. You should never take it on faith that the FDA or big Pharma has your best interests at heart.

  152. Jason Ostiguy via FB says:

The only flu I need to worry about is” the brown bottle flu”– usually only catch on thur-sat nights, mostly cured by lunchtime, on occasion can last till supper.

  153. Oh god. Hope your kids never get the flu mommypotamus. People actually die from flu. You should consider take this post down, seriously!

    • Rhonda says:

If you check the CDC National Vital Statics Report people don’t actually die from the Flu. The people that keep repeating that lie are the ones who are disseminating miss information. Did you know that is 2009 the CDC told the medical community to stop testing for the Flu because a pandemic had been declared so it was no longer necessary to test: Swine Flu Cases Overestimated?

1 .Flu deaths are attributed primarily to bacterial pneumonia triggered by the flu symptoms. The flu itself cannot kill you
      2. Most victims of the flu are those 65 years and older
      3. In almost every instance a compromised immune system is a key factor in those victims who succumb to the flu.
The devil is in the details and after the CDC gives a report to the media if someone dies who has a virus and all viruses are not the Flu there is never any follow up story because the purpose is not to inform people the purpose is to instill fear.

Here is an astonishing bit of science.
Researchers wanted to investigate why people seem to have more heart problems in the first weeks after an acute inflammatory event.
What did they use to induce inflammation in the healthy male human volunteers?
      A flu shot.
      What did they discover?
-Cardiovascular function can be abnormal for at least two weeks after getting a flu shot.

  154. Ryan Megan – more gems from Mommypotamus. Why am I going to school f or my Doctor of Public Health degree when this blog knows it all already? Wowee!

  155. Tia Rocha via FB says:

I agree Alexis Martinez if your going to research important life choices via the Internet, you should definitely find a better source than Facebook. Ultimately you should be questioning your Doctors, and other people you trust their educated opinion on.

  156. Tracy says:

How do you all put your kids in school and / or daycares if you have never given them immunizations? Just wondering , since here its required before Kindergarten as well as a booster prior to 7th grade-? Jusf curious as to how people get around that. Since my kids werent able to start school until I furnished proof of the required injections

  157. We’ve never done the flu shot, always relying in natural remedies/prevention. But, what is one to think when there where just five people in NC who died from this flu???

  158. Heidi Crisp via FB says:

I’m on the fence about vaccines and I’m learning as I go what’s best for our family but sometimes the more info I get the more frustrated I feel. I think I had the flu as a kid maybe 2-3 times. I’m 35 and I never got it as an adult until last year when I decided to get the flu shot for the first time. I got the flu a few weeks later. Now I’m pregnant and my Doctor keeps pressuring me to get it but I don’t feel good about it.

  159. Wendy zantingh before you get the flu shot they tell you that it is not 100% effective. If you watch the news the cdc always puts out a clear message that there may be new strains that they cannot possibly come up with vaccines for before flu season starts. I feel like posting stuff like this scares people and doesn’t really educate them. A first time mom who’s baby already has respiratory issues could read this and decide to skip the flu shot without doing research. Sometimes big Pham is wrong and sometimes they aren’t. A baby with respiratory issues could die from the flu … So why not take every precaution and discuss it with your pediatrician instead of listening to garbage articles. To each his own I agree , but this isn’t inspiring at all.

  160. Kirsten Wise via FB says:

    love all your info!

  161. Some of you are missing the point here, this post is not telling you what or what not to do, it is simply giving information. Everyone has their own opinions and ability to make your own choices. I find it refreshing to see other views not just one sided. If you choose to vaccinate for the flu, super! If you choose not too, super! Thats the best part, you get to choose. And this is not “researching via the internet” this is called “someone has dedicated her time to do the research for you on things that are important to her and her family and put it on her page for you to read if you choose”

  162. Jordan Dempsey via FB says:

People she is putting this up just to raise awareness, she is not saying you have to listen to this article! make your own decisions to what you feel is best for family! Quit bashing!!!

  163. Ryan Megan via FB says:

It’s not “simply giving information”, it’s cherry picking out of context and fear-mongering.

Also passively (if not actively) suggesting there is a conspiracy in the consensus and literature to mislead people, that mainstream sources of health information are “in on it” and can’t be trusted.

This is what leads to parents making terrible choices, like avoiding vaccinating their damn kids. This might be great for web traffic, but its dangerous and wrong.

  164. If people don’t talk about it, we all just think it’s safe… You should be scared…like I said knowledge is power. Do your own research with people YOU trust and then you can make a decision based on your own research and blind faith or “garbage articles” like I said I would never suggest you not vaccinate, you get to choose based on the knowledge and circumstances unique to you. Thank you for helping spread the word that “big pharm is sometimes wrong” every one has horror stories pro and con that’s why I love social media. I myself, don’t want to be a sheep!

  165. Alexis Duarte-Massey via FB says:

@Ryan Megan; agreed…It’s every parent’s choice but this sort of fear mongering is not my thing. Later, mommypotomus…”Unlike”

  167. Valeria Rech Mallett, people have died after receiving these vaccines as well! Eat clean, excercise, and live a positive life. Best medicine out there!

  168. Kris Hay via FB says:

That’s funny, because I find “mainstream sources of health information” are consistently fear-mongering and without a doubt cherry-picking their information.. So much so, that anyone presenting the “other side” is not even entertained, and instead attacked for suggesting it even exists!

  169. Jordan Dempsey via FB says:

  172. I would get the flu shot if it 1. Worked (works for 2% of people) and 2. If they didn’t load the shot with mercury and other toxins ‘that make you sick’. My X has a son who has autism. They were good little citizens who gave him all the vaccines he ‘needed’.

  173. Eva Platts via FB says:

You do your research as a parent, talk to your Paed , talk to friends etc.. But in the end, you and only you are responsible for your child and your decisions ‘s consequences. My 8 year old cannot have the flu shot bc of an allergy to an ingredient and even if he could, we chose not to give it. My 5 year old did not get one either. I chose not to get one but my husband got one. We , as a couple, had a long discussion about pros and cons and agreed on no flu shots for our kids. Yes, this year we all got the flu for the 1 st time. Both kids did fine. My son is an Aspie. We have a very Western thinking Paed but who understand our complicated family situation ( health wise), so we did not use a tamiflu. Too many possible side effects, not worth it- in our personal case. Each family is different. Each child is different. These articles are here , posted, to hopefully generate a Positive, Grown up discussion. Please be kind when you post

  174. My child is due for her 4 month set of shots, should I let her get them or piss off the doctor and refuse? I was hesitant with her first set at 2 months and voiced my concerns to the staff, but they all seem convinced to the fullest it is the best thing to do. They all sounded the same, like they all read from the same book.

    • Rhonda says:

Here are a couple of good sites to research on:
On this site what’s you’ll find very interesting are the following.
      Deadly Immunity:
In June 2000, a group of top government scientists and health officials gathered for a meeting at the isolated Simpsonwood conference center in Norcross, Ga. Convened by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the meeting was held at this Methodist retreat center, nestled in wooded farmland next to the Chattahoochee River, to ensure complete secrecy. The agency had issued no public announcement of the session — only private invitations to 52 attendees. There were high-level officials from the CDC and the Food and Drug Administration, the top vaccine specialist from the World Health Organization in Geneva, and representatives of every major vaccine manufacturer, including GlaxoSmithKline, Merck, Wyeth and Aventis Pasteur. All of the scientific data under discussion, CDC officials repeatedly reminded the participants, was strictly “embargoed.” There would be no making photocopies of documents, no taking papers with them when they left. (My note: Excluding the media and the public from this meeting was illegal)
The federal officials and industry representatives had assembled to discuss a disturbing new study that raised alarming questions about the safety of a host of common childhood vaccines administered to infants and young children. According to a CDC epidemiologist named Tom Verstraeten, who had analyzed the agency’s massive database containing the medical records of 100,000 children, a mercury-based preservative in the vaccines — thimerosal — appeared to be responsible for a dramatic increase in autism and a host of other neurological disorders among children. “I was actually stunned by what I saw,” Verstraeten told those assembled at Simpsonwood, citing the staggering number of earlier studies that indicate a link between thimerosal and speech delays, attention-deficit disorder, hyperactivity and autism. Since 1991, when the CDC and the FDA had recommended that three additional vaccines laced with the preservative be given to extremely young infants — in one case, within hours of birth — the estimated number of cases of autism had increased fifteenfold, from one in every 2,500 children to one in 166 children. (My note:The CDC announced in April 2013 that the Autism rate in the US is now 1 child in 50. The article was on HP.)

  175. This post is ridiculous and should have been more thoroughly researched. I’m second guessing everything you have posted before this.

  176. GET YOUR CHILDREN VACCINATED! I lived in the top five poorest countries in the world, Chad Africa, and saw firsthand how horrible these diseases are. There is little worse than a baby with polio…

  177. By not bcc imaging your own child you are also selfishly endangering the health of other kids with poor immunities from already terrible health problems, like cancer.

    • Rhonda says:

Have you heard of the Simpsonwood transcripts where the CDC and Vaccine Industry ADMIT they know the mercury in the vaccines are causing neurological and immune system problems including Autism in a secret meeting that the media and public was excluded from. I suggest you read it before you declare how ridiculous this article is and tell people to get their children vaccinated.

Transcripts of meeting can be found: Scientific REview of Vaccine Safety Datalink Information June 7-8, 2000 Simpsonwood Retreat Center Norcross, Georgia. CDC took it off their website because too many people were downloading it.

Analysis of the transcript: The Truth Behind the Vaccine Coverup: Russell L. Blaylock, MD Medical Verdais

      Deadly Immunity: The Mercury Coverup.

  178. True! I rarely get sick but after I got my flu shot, I got sick 3 times within 4 months despite that all my activities’ been the same.

  179. ReNee O. McDonald via FB says:

^^^becky….you do realize that we do not live in a third world country, have access to clean water and food and can wash our hands at will, along with a choice of healthy food?

And if your child has cancer….he probably shouldn’t be around anyone vaxxed our unvaxxed as his immune system is fragile. But go ahead and do not read the multiple research papers attached stating that flu shots DO NOT work.

  180. Ioanna Johnie via FB says:

Never got the flu shot at work. Everyone who did was constantly sick with something. It was quite ironic

  181. Kris Hay via FB says:

Mike Hernandez, nobody can make that decision for you.. But I would caution you against allowing it only because you’re feeling bullied by the doctor and don’t want to piss him off! They DID all read from the same book & are well-versed on how to respond to parents like you =) Take your time, do your research, listen to your intuition also.. You can decide to continue with shots once you’re comfortable with the idea, but can never ‘undo’ them.

  182. Annette Hale via FB says:

The only year I did NOT receive the flu vaccine was the year I was pregnant. I was afraid of injecting myself while carrying that precious child because of all of the uncertainty of vaccines. I started running a fever during labor and returned to the hospital 5 days after delivering my sweet baby girl. Guess what, I had pneumonia and I have never been sicker in my entire life! I can’t say I wouldn’t have gotten sick if I had had the shot but I honestly don’t think I would have or at least would have been so sick. Needless to say my family and I get the vaccine every year and will probably continue to do so.

  183. To vaccinate or not to vaccinate? Always a polarizing subject, especially since we are really only beginning to question this practice. I have an opinion on this, but I’m not even going to state it. Mommypotamus has offered her point of view with well-substantiated, valid information. Kudos to her. It’s important for people to know both sides of an argument, and then to do their own research before making important life decisions, otherwise they are just sheep. Herd mentality is not a benefit to society or one’s family, and doesn’t make one smart. I detect cognitive dissonance in many of these defensive comments. This is what makes us close our eyes, stick our fingers in our ears, and do our best to ignore information that makes us uncomfortable. We often do this by trying to discredit the bearer of the new info, without any valid knowledge of our own. “Cognitive dissonance is a psychological term describing the uncomfortable tension that may result from having two conflicting thoughts at the same time, or from engaging in behavior that conflicts with one’s beliefs, or from experiencing apparently conflicting phenomena. In simple terms, it can be the filtering of information that conflicts with what you already believe, in an effort to ignore that information and reinforce your beliefs.”

Thank you, Mommypotamus, for shining the light on the other side of this story.

  186. Dawn Sharee' Fritche Asmus via FB says:

Single dose flu vaccine and mist doesn’t contain mercury, plenty of articles out there to explain this via science articles and/Or healthcare articles

  187. Dawn Sharee' Fritche Asmus via FB says:

By pro I mean for it, not like pro meaning expert lol

  188. I do not understand how people can disregard the Cochrane Report.

  189. Annette Hale you are immunocompromised while pregnant and more susceptible to infection period. And pneumonia is not the flu. Pneumonia is most likely bacterial while influenza is viral. Very different.

  190. Steven Howard via FB says:

I’ve never had the shot. And I’ve had the flu maybe twice in the last 30+ years.

  191. Erin Schiding Hobson via FB says:

Amber-some flu info. (Follow mommypotamus, she’s awesome!)

  192. Sara Lenox via FB says:

Mommypotamus- I have a feeling you are going to lose some followers over this article! Given the recent rise is influenza-related deaths, this post is frustrating and very untimely. Do your research people and vaccinate!!

  193. Annette Hale via FB says:

Kerry Koekoek, I had viral pneumonia and it was most likely caused by the flu virus!

  194. Mandy Terrell Suhan via FB says:

Whether you are for it or against it, people need to stop preaching nonsense and at least get the facts straight. There are a lot of misconceptions and then people just perpetuate them….1. The flu shot is for respiratory influenza only (not a “stomach flu” which isn’t a flu at all). 2. There is no possible way to vaccinate against the exact strain that is going to be the menace. Science does the best they can at predicting. 3. If you got the flu in the following 14 days after a flu shot, the shot didn’t cause it….you already had it. It is an attenuated vaccine (dead virus) unless you received the flu mist (which is why you have to be over 2 yrs old and not immunocompromised to receive the mist). It hasn’t been a live vaccine since the 70’s. 4. It isn’t perfect…the immune system of each individual is very different. The vaccine gives your body the ability to recognize the virus and fight it with antibodies it has created from being exposed (this is the reason you have the shot prior to “flu season” so it has time to work. It isn’t magic…it’s science. If you don’t want to get the shot, then don’t, but stop handing out “facts” that are anecdotal at best. For those of us in the healthcare industry it is imperative to be vaccinated since we expose our outside germs to vulnerable populations everyday.

  195. Mandy Terrell Suhan via FB says:

Sorry…that was supposed to be non-attenuated (which means the virus is not a live strain)

  196. Kat Simons – I linked to The Healthy Home Economist and other sites because they have linked to the actual studies and provided analysis/context which some may find helpful. The studies are there, though, for anyone that wants to read them :)

  197. Jenn Richter via FB says:

This is FALSE!!!! As a healthcare provider and survivor of cancer I’ve Received my flu shot for years and have not gotten the flu

  198. Ramona Orvis via FB says:

Mommypotamus (and others with similar experience), I’d love to know your thoughts on the pertussis vaccine while pregnant. I’m being pushed by my Doctor to get it (however, I refuse to) Is it really better to get it while pregnant to help the baby with immunity? I’m torn, as I don’t want my newborn to go through weeks of pain for my stubbornness. TIA

  199. Danyell Johnson – As I mention in the post, the Cochrane review has found that the flu vaccine does not prevent viral transmission between adults.

  200. Holly Reason Anderson via FB says:

In the first part of the article, you say that the stronger the immune system, the stronger the illness. Then, you say that people who are vaccinated are more likely to get sick. So by your own logic, wouldn’t these people who got vaccinated have the stronger immune system if they are more likely to get sick? Also, in regards these people who apparently have stronger illnesses – are you saying that the people who are healthy and take care of themselves and rarely get sick are actually in worse condition than someone who smokes, doesn’t exercise, eats unhealthy food and gets sick frequently? You lost me in the first section of the article.

  201. Christina Ventura-DiPersia, Jon Luiten- All perspectives are welcome on the page as long as they are presented respectfully. However, it is against the policy of this page to mock or insult other members of this community.

  202. Ana Ohlandt via FB says:

Katie Campbell check this out! So happy we don’t do this for our families.

  203. Chele Beck via FB says:

Well now i dont feel so guilty getting the flu when people ask if i got the shot!
My mom always swore they GAVE her the flu! Ha

  204. Katie Campbell via FB says:

    Yes Ana Ohlandt, me too!

  205. Holly Reason Anderson – “The stronger our immune system, the stronger the illness” is a statement made by Dr. Ted Koren, D.C. that I quoted. The Cochrane Review I linked to did find that although the flu vaccine was ineffective at preventing the illness, it did lessen the symptoms somewhat. I can’t say for sure, but someone like Dr. Koren might say that this is an inhibited immune response that prevents a thorough “house cleaning.”

On the subject of people who take care of themselves and rarely get ill vs. someone who does not and gets sick frequently, I believe what Dr. Koren may have been trying to say in the first section is that bouts of intense illness every once in awhile indicate a well-functioning immune system, while frequent/low grade illnesses could indicated a compromised immune system. I am not a doctor, of course, so I encourage you to do your research and discuss your questions with a trusted healthcare provider before deciding what’s best for you and your family. :)

  206. Mommypotamus – my comment was not disrespectful. I will ask that you allow those with public health and epidemiologic training to utilize their education to properly assess the results of public health studies. As many above have pointed out, those who want to cherry pick what they want to in order to fearmonger and gain more readership is incredibly irresponsible and disheartening.

  207. Carrie Blaesing Dadey via FB says:

    Thanks Heather.

  208. Katie Butenko via FB says:

It got me really sick. No more flu shots for me. It’s been like 8 years since last one and never sick!!!! Home remedies work the best!!!!!

  209. Christina Ventura-DiPersia – While I realize that everyone’s interpretation may be somewhat different, it did seem to have a mocking tone in my opinion. On that, and on the subject of who has the right to read and weigh public health studies I suppose we will have to agree to disagree. As a parent I believe it is my responsibility to be as informed as I can be regarding this and other topics. Doctors used to recommend smoking and they also used to routinely x-ray the abdomens of pregnant women. Just because something is accepted by the medical community does not mean it’s safe.

  210. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

Poorly written article by someone who is ill-informed regarding vaccinations. Interesting timing of your article with the rise in cases and the associated rise in deaths from the flu. You clearly do not work in healthcare. Please don’t respond by telling me the media is fear mongering, because I am witnessing it firsthand. What also stands out to me is that you refer to these studies, yet you do not provide the reference or even a link to the study itself so that professionals such as myself can review these studies.

  211. Mary Pereira Wood – I did link to the Cochrane Review and the Canadian study. The other articles which reference other studies link to them within their posts.

  212. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

Those of us who are healthcare providers do not simply recommend the flu vax because that is what the CDC wants us to do. We recommend it because we are watching people die from a disease that could have been prevented. We all know the flu shot is not perfect, and there are years that it is not a good match, however, from what I see I would rather take my chance on a 60% match than no coverage at all. And your links are not showing up (it may be fb on my phone?

  213. Mary Pereira Wood – I think it’s your phone . . . they are there! I wholeheartedly believe that most healthcare professionals recommend the flu vax out of sincere concern, but in my opinion the Cochrane Review shows the data does not support its effectiveness.

  214. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

What we are seeing are some have gotten the vax and still have the flu, but the vast majority of cases are in the unvaccinated. And btw, a retrospective review is never an optimal study because it usually has bias.

Anyway, there has been more than one occasions that a patient quotes stuff like this they have read from blogs like this. In all honestly, blogs like this are directly responsible for the morbidity and mortality of others. I do not know why people believe everything the read on the internet, but they do. Human nature I guess. My point is, that with the knowledge that you are spreading information that directly leads to the harm of others, I want to know how you feel about that?? I torture myself over every decision I make for my patients, and I spend countless hours awake at night to review the day to make sure I didnt miss something. I could never live with myself if I knew I directly harmed someone. Could you? Because propaganda like this is harmful. I just hope you can sleep at night.

  215. Responsible for morbidity and mortality ? Well the last time I knew if someone feels strongly on a topic or life choice, they do what they feel is right for them regardless of what they read!!!!!!!!

  216. Great read Mommypotamus. Well researched and supported! If people can’t read the truth in your words, they’re too far brainwashed and are obviously happier with someone else being in charge of their health.

  217. Did you read the study conclusions? “AUTHORS’ CONCLUSIONS: Influenza vaccines are efficacious in children older than two years but little evidence is available for children under two. There was a marked difference between vaccine efficacy and effectiveness. That no safety comparisons could be carried out emphasizes the need for standardisation of methods and presentation of vaccine safety data in future studies. It was surprising to find only one study of inactivated vaccine in children under two years, given recent recommendations to vaccinate healthy children from six months old in the USA and Canada. If immunisation in children is to be recommended as public-health policy, large-scale studies assessing important outcomes and directly comparing vaccine types are urgently required.”

  218. Mary Pereira Wood – The view I have presented is not unique to me. There are physicians such as Dr. Tenpenny that share a similar viewpoint. I admire your concern for your patients and wholeheartedly support it, but I do not believe that having a different perspective is de facto irresponsible or harmful. It is my hope that individuals will do their own risk/benefit analysis and do what is right for them and their families.

  219. Beth Tolliver via FB says:

I don’t get why the issue of flu prevention has to be so black and white. I’m considered in the high risk category. My husband & I both got vaccinated this year. Our 3 year old son will next week. We have passed on many vaccines and tend to treat things with natural remedies. But after much research and prayer, we had peace about vaccinating this year. So, we got vaccinated AND we eat a healthy diet, exercise and continue to use natural means to keep our immune systems strong. And I’ve never gotten the flu from the shot. I have, however, been hospitalized more times than I’d like to remember for pneumonia, bronchitis and other complications from contracting the flu without being vaccinated.

  220. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

Mommypotamus, I am sorry you feel that way. Believe it or not, your words do have an impact. And they are harmful. When I have patients quote blogs like yours for the reasons they haven’t been vaccinated days before they die of multisystem organ failure from the flu….then yes. Your words are harming people. Whether you want to believe it or not.

  221. Julene Bateman via FB says:

Mary Pereira Wood, would you mind including the study where it shows that most individuals suffering from the flu are unvaccinated, like you claimed? I would be interested in reading that.

  222. Julene Bateman via FB says:

One could also argue that vaccines can be harmful…

  223. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

Julene, I am not quoting a study. I am referring to the patients I have been caring for since the start of the flu season. The majority of patient that I am admitting (90%) have not been vaccinated. Data regarding the efficacy of a flu vax to the years predominant strain usually isn’t available until the year after. It takes time To collect the data. If you want the data on the match between the 2013 vaccine and 2013 flu season it is on the CDC website under the link “seasonal flu.”

  224. Seeing as how 7 people have died from the flu where we are from, and 4 of them had the flu shot, I would say that this article is pretty true. Also, if you don’t like the posts in this group, simply unlike the page and you are done. This is a more naturalistic site, it would be safe to say, these articles are to be expected.
We don’t get the flu shot, I have great faith in our Lord God, and Mother Nature. If it is my time, it is my time. No matter if I have had a flu shot or not. I don’t enjoy poisoning myself, I have an immune system.

  225. Except if you all unliked this page, you would have nowhere to spread your negativity.

  226. Tia Rocha via FB says:

Sorry Shay Priebe Zimmer- Facebook is the Last place you should be going to find important information, what person in their right mind would listen to a total stranger over the internet instead of talking to medical professionals?! 227. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

Julene, nothing is without risk. Anyone will tell you that. Everything has side effects.

Amy, I didn’t like the page. It came up in my feed. I had no intention of following it long term. I got curious and saw this topic, something near and dear to my heart. And what I am saying is clearly falling on dead ears. Good luck to you all.

  228. Keri Hessel via FB says:

This boy got the shot a month earlier and still caught H1N1

  229. Kerri Alicia Galea Price via FB says:

I have counted all my friends and their kids whom got the shot. Guess what? – they are all sick now. I will take the risk of the flu that my natural immunity can fight it off, rather then injecting foreign toxins into my body to “help.” I have never had the flu shot and never will. I’m not afraid of the flu. It’s a VIRUS and most who are dying have had the shot. You see its the “host” of which the bacteria is invaded, so therefore if the host is strong the pathogen will not manifest. Dont buy into the big pharma – they do not have our best interest at hand. So some will contract and some wont whether you get the vaccines or not. I myself, will always say NO!

  230. Mary Pereira Wood – I respectfully return to the Cochrane data. If the info was useless such analysis would not be published. It is my contention that there is not enough evidence to support the efficacy of the flu vaccine.

    • Rhonda says:

I’m new to this site but I have been researching drugs for over a decade and I have seen all the ruses that the pharmaceutical companies use. The information you have presented is sound. the people who are objecting have been indoctrinated by fear and are afraid of taking the responsibility of their families health into their own hands. As one young mom commented to me recently “If there are no vaccines that work, what are we suppose to do?”. I found this stunning that people have given so much personal power to the government and vaccine industry. One commenter on this thread stated the only thing being heard is the bad affects of the Flu shot but not the people who don’t have any problems. The propaganda of the CDC & Vaccine industry have been saying the shot is safe & effective for years so I don’t know how that blogger can make that statement.

The Cochrane Study says study reveals influenza vaccines only prevent the flu in 1.5 out of 100 adults

There is another study: Influenza Vaccine-Induced Anti-HA2 Antibodies Promote Virus Fusion and Enhance Influenza Virus Respiratory Disease:
As documented by a new study, getting a flu vaccination can result in coming down with a more virulent influenza. This phenomenon was noted during the swine flu pandemic-that-wasn’t a couple of years ago, but pooh-poohed by skeptics.

This supports the work of Dr. Danuta Skowronski, of the British Columbia Centre for Disease Control, who investigated the data related to the 2009 swine flu “pandemic”. She noted that people who had received the seasonal flu vaccine in the fall of 2008 were more likely to fall ill when the “pandemic” swine flu came around the following spring and summer. Skeptics, of course, denied her findings. Regarding Skowronski’s research, she stated to The Canadian Press[2]:

I think … what they’re showing is a biological mechanism that warrants further evaluation in terms of its relevance to the use of seasonal vaccines in humans and what that may mean for the next pandemic threat. …

… It’s concerning, obviously, because if this is the mechanism, then it means there needs to be a lot more … attention paid to these universal vaccine candidates that are targeting that stalk antibody.

      This is very interesting:
You will never look at vaccinated children the same!- Shedding Viruses

I appreciate the task you have taken on trying to educate people who are so used to be told how to live their lives by the government yet at the same time scream they don’t want government interfering in their lives and health choices. Most people don’t know that the biggest money maker for the pharmaceutical industry is vaccines. The industry made 50 Billion dollars on the Flu Vaccine in 2009, even though there was no pandemic just from their fear mongering. Most people don’t know that employees of the CDC, Vaccine Industry, FDA, IOM, WHO and other who make decisions about vaccines are allowed to hold stock in each others company. It is not considered a conflict of interest. They all make money when vaccines are being sold. Pediatrician offices are primarily financed on selling vaccines. They get money from the pharmaceutical company for giving vaccines, they get bonuses from the Insurance industry for having 100% vaccination rates, the school system get money for vaccinating and the state gets money for vaccinating. It is indeed a racket and it has taken people many years to make the connections because it’s a secret. The biggest secret is vaccinating is not about health it politics and money.

  231. Keri Hessel via FB says:

Mary – almost everyone I know that has gotten the flu shot has come down with the flu. Personally, I have never had the flu shot and have yet to have the flu. I concentrate my efforts on building up the humoral response of my immune system. I should add that I have been exposed to H1N1 MANY TIMES. I was a teacher, and I worked in many different schools that were infected during the many outbreaks. I do find it funny that you are criticizing Heather for not providing links, (when she does), and then we are supposed to just take your word for it when you say more of the people that are sick that you see have not been vaccinated. Well, I have observed the complete opposite.

  232. Keri Hessel via FB says:

  235. Rachelle says:

Studies show it is more harmful for a fetus to be subjected to a mom with a fever than vaccine side effects. Also, children who have never gotten the flu shot must get a series of two shots to increase effectiveness. Not sure this was the case for tthe studies in the cochrane review. This is an incredibly one sided post, lost respect for this author.

  236. Keri Hessel via FB says:

Heather – thank you for writing about such a controversial issue. It’s hard to understand some of the comments on this thread. Regardless of people’s personal opinions, I don’t understand why The Cochrane Review is not a good enough source for your critics. It is also obvious that many people did not even take the time to read your entire blog post. Your explanation of the TH1 and TH2 response is very good. Many people don’t know that TH1 response is much more effective. Think about this logically, it can take up to two weeks for enough antibodies to be made to fight a virus. That is a long time. If we relied only on antibodies to fight disease the human population would be a lot smaller. Vaccines cause an imbalance between the TH1 and TH2 response. (This is one of the reasons why there are so many autoimmune diseases prevalent today). I think that someone who has a strong immune system has a much better chance of fighting the flu than someone who gets the shot. The shot not only has a low efficacy rate, but viruses mutate very quickly, so even if they make the vaccine for the correct strain, it might not make a difference. But to each their own. I think it is pretty obnoxious for anyone to attack Heather for expressing her views on her blog.

Mary, I know nothing is without risks. I was just making sure you knew that. But I think it’s silly for you to think that you should be allowed to dictate what risks people should and should not take. You may provide people with information to help them make a decision, but ultimately you should respect their right to make informed decisions for their own body, regardless of whether or not they choose to vaccinate.

  239. Julene Bateman via FB says:

You could also go make your own blog with your own research, if you are so concerned with the public harm that Heather is causing. Heather is simply providing people with more information to help them make their own decisions.

  244. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

Mommypotamus: I have finally managed to get the link to work. A few things: first the study you are quoting is 8 years old. Out of date, and also published before the 2009 H1N1 epidemic-it changed how we viewed Influenza in heathy, young people. Second: the authors of the study actually state that the vaccine is efficacious up to 79% with live vaccine and 59% with inactivated virus. It ONLY states that when compared to placebo that there is no difference in the age group under two years old.

So tell me, where are you getting your argument that shots don’t work when you keep quoting this study?

I just cannot follow your logic?

Julene, I respect everyone’s right to make an informed decision. I do not dictate what risks people should and should not take. Helping people to make an informed decision is part of my job. But part of an informed consent that patient makes a decision on unbiased data and they are aware of both risks and benefits. That is not the case here. I cannot respect someone providing misinformation such as what has been provided. If we are to take that study for gold (since she keeps referring back to it) then it is stating the complete opposite of what Heather is advertising.

And it is not obnoxious to present the opposite point of view. As a matter of fact, in medicine, we question each other repeatedly and challenge each other to prove their way is the right way. It is not an attack. It is the way of life for healthcare professionals in order to keep medicine moving forward. We are the first to point out when treatment is wrong or not working. The first to point out something is harmful. The first to question a colleague. It is one thing that keeps medicine constantly moving forward and in a state of flux. We know nothing is perfect, but we strive for perfection. And if someone is going to make statements regarding the preventative medicine of other individuals and thereby effecting their health, then I expect to hold them to those same standards.

  245. One doctor cited is a chiropractor with no scientific experience. This year’s vaccine protected against H1N1. All deaths in Austin were in individuals who had not been vaccinated.

  246. Amy Price via FB says:

The actual ingredients in vaccines are terrifying. There are things like mercury, aluminum, formaldehyde, aborted fetal cells, etc etc….
Ask your doctor to show you the insert from the actual VACCINE box….not the pamphlets they hand out but the actual ingredients lists. It’s sickening what the government allows to be injected into babies and kids and adults. All in an effort to stuff their pockets with money. If you research both sides of vaccinating you will see that vaccines do cause illnesses and death. You’ll also see that with the rise of the amount of vaccines there is also a huge spike in autism, SIDS and lots of health related issues like add, adhd, eczema, asthma, allergies, etc…..
I’m sorry but it’s all about money for the government.
My advice RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH…. ALL SIDES….Not just government run medical websites.

  248. Amy Price via FB says:

Oh and Mary Pereira Wood, don’t act like Mommypotamus words are the cause of patients dying. People need to be held accountable for their OWN decisions and actions. If people die from vaccinating that was their choice. If people die from not vaccinating, again that was their choice. Seeking out MANY sources of info before making a decision is the best choice. Seeking out ONLY medical professionals is beyond Silly.

  249. Lynn Tomaszewski via FB says:

Ok, firstly, I did not have a choice to get the flu vaccine. I work in a hospital, I had to vaccinate. Secondly, I am gluten free so I contacted the manufacturer about the ingredients in the vaccine. There were no preservatives in most single use vaccines. Thirdly, this years vaccine DID contain the vaccine for H1N1.

  250. those who are immunocompromised or have A LOT of co-morbidities should educate themselves and then get the vaccine. those folks can and do die from the flu.

  252. Mary Pereira Wood – I am drawing it from this statement in the review, “The review showed that reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin but there is evidence of widespread manipulation of conclusions and spurious notoriety of the studies.”

I am also drawing it from other sources, such as this additional Cochrane Review which found that vaccinating nursing-home workers did not reduce the number of confirmed flu cases among residents. “”What troubled us is that [shots] had no effect on laboratory-confirmed influenza,” said Dr. Roger Thomas of the University of Calgary, lead author of the paper published by the respected Cochrane Library.

I’m also thinking of this study study published in the Archives of Pediatric & Adolescent Medicine which found that vaccinating young children against the flu had no effect on flu-related hospitalizations or visits to the doctor during two flu seasons. According to the researchers, “significant influenza vaccine effectiveness could not be demonstrated for any season, age, or setting” examined. Source: Granted, in this case the researchers say the flu vaccine was a “suboptimal match” for the most prevalent circulating strain that year. However, that is one of my concerns about the vaccine overall – get vaccinated for one strain and at least one study shows your chances of getting another strain go up if it is circulating as well.

If you weren’t affecting other people’s health, and the health of their children, with this half-baked nonsense, I wouldn’t care, hey maybe you’d all end up clearing up the murky end of the gene pool a bit.

  256. Michael Salinas via FB says:

Dr. Salk would be rolling in his grave if he read some of this nonsense

  257. Mary Pereira Wood via FB says:

In the Cochrane review you just posted, that study had a major flaw. In order for it to to be valid, they would have to screen all people who visited those patients to see if they got vaccinated or not. As a matter of fact, every person walking into that building would need to be screened. Not just the healthcare workers.

  258. Vicki Rue via FB says:

“Oh and Mary Pereira Wood, don’t act like Mommypotamus words are the cause of patients dying. People need to be held accountable for their OWN decisions and actions. If people die from vaccinating that was their choice. If people die from not vaccinating, again that was their choice. Seeking out MANY sources of info before making a decision is the best choice. Seeking out ONLY medical professionals is beyond Silly.”

The problem with that statement is that those who choose not to vaccinate put those who CANNOT be vaccinated in mortal danger of illness. That is morally reprehensible.

  286. As a scientist that works for a company that produces a flu vaccine, I’m shocked that ignorant posts like this from “Google-researchers” ever sees the light of day. Thankfully there’s plenty of educated skeptics around to hold people to fact-based conclusion, not poor statistical manipulation. I’ve seen the research, I know what I’m injecting into my arm every year like clockwork and I have not had the flu in any season that I’ve been vaccinated. I’d absolutely love to allow the ignorant the chance to prove their argument, but sadly there are innocent people that can not receive these vaccines for real medical reasons. Their only chance is a healthy vaccinated community surrounding them. But hey, I’m sure these are the same people that show “evidence” that their kids died from flu and other illnesses because of something other than their neglect in court.

  287. Samantha Good via FB says:

Wanna do research? Why don’t you google pictures of children with these disease you’re so against preventing? How dare you put your own uneducated selfishness above the health and safety of society!!!!!!!

  288. Tiffany Valls via FB says:

Mary Pereira Wood I’m sorry dear but the vaccine was created based off a guess on what strains would be going around this flu season. There is no guarantee that the vaccine even contains the right strains. If you eat a healthy diet and know how to properly care for your body if you get the flu you are better off. Fear based medicine is not smart. Doctors and nurses should educate people how to treat viruses or diseases if contracted instead of pushing ‘guess’ vaccines that compromise our immune systems and then treat said illnesses out of fear as well.

  308. Rhonda says:

“According to Hugh Fudenberg, MD, the world’s leading immunogeneticist and 13th most quoted biologist of our times (nearly 850 papers in peer review journals), if an individual has had five consecutive flu shots between 1970 and 1980 (the years studied) his/her chances of getting Alzheimer’s Disease is ten times higher than if they had one, two or no shots. I asked Dr. Fudenberg why this was so and he said it was due to the mercury and aluminum that is in every flu shot (and most childhood shots). The gradual mercury and aluminum buildup in the brain causes cognitive dysfunction. Is that why Alzheimer’s is expected to quadruple? Notes: Recorded from Dr. Fudenberg’s speech at the NVIC International Vaccine Conference, Arlington, VA September, 1997. Quoted with permission. Alzheimer’s to quadruple statement is from John’s Hopkins Newsletter Nov 1998.” —-Ted Koren, D. C. Koren Publications (800-537-3001). The years stated are the years this was being studied. The Flu vaccine has 25 mcg of mercury in them except the Flu Mist.

“At least one vaccine strain was isolated from 80% of FluMist recipients; strains were recovered from 1-21 days post vaccination”
“The duration of FluMist vaccine virus replication and shedding have not been established”
In other words, people who take FluMist become contagious with influenza. This is important because FluMist is pushed on children, teachers, hospital workers, first responders, and others who are in close contact situations. How many people receiving FluMist will avoid contact with immunocompromised individuals for at least 3 weeks? How do they even know who to avoid? FluMist is live influenza.

-Vancouver neuroscientist Chris Shaw shows a link between the aluminum hydroxide used in vaccines, and symptoms associated with Parkinson’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease), and Alzheimer’s…..“This is suspicious,” he told the Georgia Straight in a phone interview from his lab near Heather Street and West 12th Avenue. “Either this [link] is known by industry and it was never made public, or industry was never made to do these studies by Health Canada. I’m not sure which is scarier.” Similar adjuvants are used in the following vaccines, according to Shaw’s paper: hepatitis A and B, and the Pentacel cocktail, which vaccinates against diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, polio, and a type of meningitis….“No one in my lab wants to get vaccinated,” he said. “This totally creeped us out. We weren’t out there to poke holes in vaccines. But all of a sudden, oh my God—we’ve got neuron death!” —[Media 3/2006 Aluminium adjuvant] Vaccines show sinister side

-According to the CDC, vaccines labeled “thimerosal-free” often have a little asterisk to warn you: “This vaccine has ‘trace’ amounts of thimerosal, which the FDA says is equivalent to thimerosal-free products.” There are basically two kinds of flu shots given: one contains 25 mcg of mercury and is often given as the “regular” flu shot to those with no special circumstances, and the other is labeled “thimerasol-free” (containing fewer than 3mcg of mercury) and is given to young children and pregnant women.

Take a look at “safe” and “un-safe” levels of mercury, per the FDA/EPA:
Two part per billion is the maximum amount of mercury that deems water “safe” for drinking. Anything over 200 ppb mercury is considered TOXIC. But guess what?

There is up to 300 ppb mercury in the “thimerosal-free” flu vaccine. There is 25,000 ppb mercury given in the regular flu shot. (

The Department of Defense classifies mercury as a hazardous material that could cause death if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Studies indicate that mercury tends to accumulate in the brains of primates and other animals after they are injected with vaccines. Mercury poisoning has been linked to cardiovascular disease, autism, seizures, mental retardation, hyperactivity, dyslexia and many other nervous system conditions. (

  319. Kevin Converse via FB says:

India JUST eliminated Polio within their population after finally introducing a vaccine 5 years ago. The old news that vaccines work is new again with this story. The evidence is clear and happening right now. The flu vaccine (live or dead version) cannot make you more likely to catch the flu. The body simply does not work that way which is why you will NEVER find a legitimate study passing peer review (meaning the results can be duplicated) that ever shows this result. Instead of ONLY treading in circles that reinforce your worldview, you should challenge your ideas and honestly give weight and credence appropriately to repeatable scientific evidence.

  326. Rick L says:

I’ve done a fair amount of research on flu-shots myself, and I have to say that this article is one of the best I have seen for providing sources. As for myself, the last time I had a flu shot (in 2002) I became very ill with the flu starting the next day, and it took several months for that to completely fade. It also creamed my immune system, which was documented by blood tests showing that my 3 major immunoglobulin counts had dropped significantly. At any rate, I have not had a flu shot since 2002, and neither have I had the flu, and my immune system has been built back up to where I no longer get the repeated respiratory infections that I had for 6-8 years after having the shot.

NOTE: Yes, that is a personal anecdote, but isn’t all research into the impact of illness and/or treatment on human beings based on “personal anecdotes” in the end? When I go to the doctor, his first line of diagnosis is based on question about how I feel or what my symptoms are. Isn’t that a “personal anecdote? So let’s not be so quick to discount any person’s story of what happened to him or her as a result of an immunization, or a disease. That’s what it’s all about, really.

I also have to commend Heather for her patience with some of the posters here. There has been one person in particular who is not simply opposing Heather, but slandering her and using vulgar language in doing so. I would have warned that person once, and deleted his/her posts the next time. However, I’m sensing that Heather is allowing a lot of leeway for those who disagree with her on this particular issue, for which her opponents should be thankful.

  327. Scott says:

Reading both this blog and some of the comments caused me to reflect on the common concept that women are immune compromised during pregnancy. This view is supported by the CDC ( ) if one digs into their support of annual flu vaccination.
Woa, lets back up a minute. One of the most important functions of a species is self promulgation. If that is the case, then a species with a built in weakness (defect?!) during that process would seem at a disadvantage.
If one digs some more you find this theory of immune suppression during pregnancy is based on the premise that the fetus is a foreign invader (Sir Peter Medawar) and hence suppression of the immune system is necessary for survival of the fetus. With the advancement of analytical tools we find that this is not the case (!po=2.00000).
Indeed, to intentionally depress the immune system during that time by giving a vaccine is to put the fetus at risk. “Vaccines are immune suppressing; that is they depress our immune functions. The chemicals in the vaccines depress our immune system; the virus present depresses immune function, and the foreign DNA/RNA from animal tissues depresses immunity. Toraldo, et al found that the chemotaxis and metabolic function of PMNs (polymorphonuclear neutrophils) was significantly reduced after vaccinations were given and did not return to normal for months. Other indicators of immune system depression included reduced lymphocyte viability, neutrophil hyper-segmentation, and a reduced white cell count.”
There are numerous other assumptions the CDC and others would have you swallow as fact that may not be. You decide.
